  2. 2. Our Vision <ul><li>Our vision for success is a school where students are eager to learn and ask questions, teachers are excited to teach and grow as professionals and families are valued partners in their child’s academic and social growth. </li></ul>
  3. 3. Mission <ul><li>Here at The Second Element Academy, our mission is to ensure that every student graduates from college. In addition to literacy and mathematics, we teach art, music, physical education, science, geography, social studies, and place an emphasis on technology. </li></ul><ul><li>All students are assessed when they come into our school so that we can indentify their starting point, track their growth, and make academic interventions. Monitoring student progress is an ongoing activity. </li></ul>
  4. 4. <ul><li>We ensure that teaching is effective and supports the needs of all students. </li></ul><ul><li>We empower students to make good decisions that will enable them to lead a healthful, independent and fulfilled life. </li></ul><ul><li>We ensure that school leaders and Board members constantly support and develop teaching and learning, providing every appropriate resource. </li></ul><ul><li>All teachers are reflective and self-evaluative practitioners, regularly engaging in active and open communication in a desire to develop and improve. </li></ul>About Us
  5. 5. School Structure <ul><li>Year: </li></ul><ul><li>         The school year will be a 180 day, 36 week normal school year. The school year will begin in September after the holiday and continue through the end of June. All holidays will be observed. There will also be half days due to professional development, parent-teacher conferences, and other various staff meetings. </li></ul><ul><li>Week: Students will attend school five days out the week.  The week will consist of alternating days that will align with your student's schedules. </li></ul><ul><li>Day:  The school day will be a eight hour school day, where the day will begin at 8 am and continue up until 4 pm. </li></ul><ul><li>  </li></ul><ul><li>Summer Program: Furthermore, the school year will be extended through an initiative summer program that will allow students to attend an active learning camp/internship to build on technological skills and interests. The summer program will begin the week following July fourth weekend and continue through the first week of August. </li></ul><ul><li>  </li></ul>

Curriculum <ul><ul><li>The curriculum will consist of English Language Arts, Math, Science, Social Studies, Physical Education, &Technology </li></ul></ul><ul><li>  </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Curriculum will be constructed around the students' needs in which it fosters group learning through a constructivists apporach. </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Technology will be implemented across the subject areas to encourage inquiry learning and understanding of current and future technology of society.  </li></ul></ul><ul><li>  </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Students will be taught all concepts of each subject area outlined by the curriculum map using the national standards/State standards as a guide.     </li></ul></ul>

Electives <ul><li>Students will also have the opportunity to engage in various technological electives, some courses include: </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Computer graphics </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><ul><li>Students work with creating and manipulating computer graphics. </li></ul></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Communications </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><ul><li>Engages students in various forms of societal communications </li></ul></ul></ul><ul><ul><ul><li>Involves public speakings and research of methods of current communications </li></ul></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Media Literacy </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><ul><li>Students analyze current and past media and effects of society. </li></ul></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Visual Art Design </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><ul><li>  An extension of art, in which students learn the basic concepts of technology as a tool in creating art. </li></ul></ul></ul><ul><li>  </li></ul>
  8. 8. <ul><li>Our Philosophy </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Our teaching philosophy revolves around Engaged Learning </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>We believe that in order to learn, students must be an active participant. </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>  Students continuously research, discuss, create projects, and use technology to make discoveries based on their choices. </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Our teachers will serves as facilitators to guide our students to their desired goal. </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>We believe that this learning style energizes students and gives them a  joy of learning that will lead to a lifelong passion for solving problems, understanding, and taking the next step in their thinking.   </li></ul></ul>
  9. 9. <ul><li>Our Methodology </li></ul><ul><ul><li>We will be teaching students using Constructionivism </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Our students will learn using hands on activity based teaching and learning. </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>We will focus on the personalized way a learner internalizes, shapes, and transforms information </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Our school will emphasize less on isolated skill exercises and more on learning with meaningful exercises such as operating a bank or writing a class newspaper. </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Our instruction will be designed so that the student can build new ideas and concepts from old ones </li></ul></ul>
