    • 250,000 - 3.5 Million (most recent census counted over 280,000)

    • 15% are children

    • 41% of the homeless are families

    • There are 30,000 homeless in NYC.
    • 10,000 of them are children

    • 13% are single women
  • 7.
    • 41% are single men
  • 8.
    • 5% are unaccompanied children

    • 68% of all homeless are male
  • 10.
    • 39% are mentally ill
  • 11.
    • 40% are black
  • 12.
    • 11% are Hispanic
  • 13.
    • 30 - 45% are veterans
  • 14.
    • 33% have been in drug/alcohol rehab.
  • 15.
    • 48% are substance abusers
  • 16.
    • 9% have AIDS or AIDS-related diseases
  • 17.
    • 44% of homeless people work.
  • 18.
    • 20% have been in a mental hospital (From 1955 - 1990 the population of mental hospitals declined from 558,922 to 92,059)
  • 19.
    • From 1974 - 1983 there was a 50% increase in people living below the poverty level but a 20% decrease in low-income housing. By 1985 demand exceeded supply by 100%. The problem has only grown since then.
