  • (Maybe create a techno-cheerleaders slide to insert here).Now, that DOESN’T mean that our students are automatically better prepared to learn today than they were five or ten years ago. In fact, if you look closely at learning results—something that Mark Bauerlein has done—you’ll find that despite having access to more social learning spaces, today’s students are actually struggling academically. Here’s a few statistics that might shock you:Only 34 percent of eighth graders demonstrated “solid” or “superior” reading abilities on the most recent National Assessment of Educational Progress (Lee, J., Grigg, W.S., & Donahue, P.L., 2007). Only 20 percent of 17 year-olds report reading for fun daily, and that 15-24 year-olds spend just under 9 minutes a day reading for any reason (Hess, 2008). Less than half of our teens can place the Civil War in the proper century, almost 40 percent are unsure of when World War I happened, and almost 30 percent didn’t know that Columbus sailed for America before 1750. The are also taking actions that we wouldn’t necessarily be proud of in SM spaces. They include:complaining about teachers (54%), picking on their peers (37%), sharing personal information that they would not have shared in other forums (28%) in social networking sites. creating profiles with false identities (25%), hacking into the accounts of other users (24%), and posting naked or semi-naked photos and videos of themselves (13%), All of these behaviors have led Dr. Dimitri A. Christakis, George Adkins Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Washington, to compare social networking websites to “playgrounds with no parental supervision” (Common Sense Media, 2009.
