Communicate silently through paging
1. Communicate silently through paging
Pagers are a wireless telecommunication device that receives numeric and text messages.
Pagers are not used to make voice calls like phones or 2way radios. Today pagers are used in
many different facilities such as in hospitals, nursing homes, military bases, police departments,
fire stations, restaurants and in public safety. Most hospitals use pagers to send text messages
to the nursing staff, doctors, and patients. Within the hospital environment, pagers work better
than mobile phones because many electronic devices used in hospitals either create
interference for cell phones or are affected by interference caused by cell phones. Cell phones
will drain their battery quickly due to limited cell signal within the hospital environment and will
require frequent recharging. Pagers also allow for the transmittal of critical and emergency
messages to staff, individuals, or to groups of individuals. Doctors, nurses and patients can
receive messages in many areas of the hospital. Many hospitals rely on pagers to communicate
with patients that are ambulatory. This allows the staff to reach patients that are able to move
about the hospital.
Should there be a patient emergency; a nurse call system tied to the paging system allows
patients to signal for assistance. Paging systems include multiple pagers, one or more
transmitters and repeaters, paging software and optional nurse call buttons. The entire system
is owned by the hospital eliminating the need for any monthly service fees. Some facilities refer
to the pagers as beepers because early pagers responded to a page with a simple beep. But
today pagers can respond to pages with flashing lights, vibration, music, a variety of beeping
sounds, or a combination. Pagers are easy and convenient to use because they are lightweight,
they fit into the pocket or clipped to a belt, and are easy to use. Paging systems increase
efficiency by reducing stress and noise, allowing the staff to quietly communicate with each
other while caring for patients and protecting privacy.
Paging systems work where other messaging technology may struggle to receive coverage.
They work in remote areas, underground, and can be used in environments that do not permit
mobile phone usage such as hospitals and airplanes. Pager cost is low compared to other
technologies. Messages are received within a few seconds which is a vital reason why pagers
are utilized by many emergency facilities. Hospitals use nurse pager systems to be notified of
specific events such as emergency calls or directives from the head nurse. Paging systems are
used for sending messages to individuals or groups, and for contacting staff members no matter
where they may be located at any point in time. Pager pendants as part of a nurse call system
give patients peace of mind in knowing that help is just a button push away. For more details
