  • 2. nOOb The n00b (new-bee) Sessions are introductions to .NET Development. They are 30 minute presentations at the beginning of each meeting demonstrating some practical development tools, techniques or tips. The first series of these sessions revolve around the .NET development environment.
  • 3. ASP.NET Web Development
    • ASP.NET Development Server (aka Cassini)
      • Lightweight ASP.NET host environment that installs with Visual Studio 2005
    • Internet Information Server (IIS)
      • The production ASP.NET hosting environment for Windows Server (Requires .NET)
      • Slightly Scaled down version for Windows XP environment.

  • 5. ASP.NET Development Server Pros
    • Installs with Visual Studio 2005, works out of the box.
    • Integrates well with the new Visual Studio 2005 Web project.
  • 6. ASP.NET Development Server Cons
    • Inconsistencies with Production Platform
      • Threading behaves differently, can make it difficult to debug race conditions.
      • Temporary directory user rights issues that may crop up in Production or QC will not appear in development.
    • Out-of-the-box install does not support VS2K3 Web Application Projects (Pre-SP1) .

    • It is the Production Platform Software
      • (when running on Windows Server)
    • Configuration
      • More control over configuration options
      • Permission issues more transparent
    • Supports Visual Studio 2003 Web Application Projects
      • (not required now with Visual Studio 2005 SP1)
  • 9. IIS Cons
    • Separate Installation
    • More to Administer/Configure
    • Virtual Dir./Project Configuration challenges
    • Always On (unless you start/stop manually)
    • Potentially larger security attack surface
    • May violate IT enterprise policy
    • XP is Version 5.1 while WS2K3 is 6.0 and Vista is 7.0
