Edmonton’s Gold Bar Wastewater Treatment Plant is one of the most advanced in Canada (North America?). It operates successfully in close proximity to residential neighbourhoods and features state-of-the-art safety and control systems. One of the latest additions is a membrane treatment process that is used to recycle 15Ml/day of water for use by nearby oil refineries. Continuous development is supported at the Wastewater Research and Training Centre on the same site.
Edmonton’s solid waste management centre is home to a complete range of technologies for managing municipal waste. These include: a Materials Recovery Facility for sorting and packaging recyclable materials: the largest composting facility in North America; landfill gas recovery and power generation systems; a landfill leachate processing plant; a processing facility for electronics and electrical waste and a brand new waste sorting and transfer facility. The latter will also house fuel preparation processing for a gasification plant to be built over the next two years. There are also plans to include, on the same site, a paper recycling plant, a biosolids drying plant, and an anaerobic digestion plant for food waste (not shown here). The existing Research and Development Facility will be expanded over the next year to include a gasification research facility.
The wastewater and solid waste facilities are integrated into one system by virtue of material flows: (Click) Biosolids from the wastewater plant are sent by pipeline for dewatering and composting at solid waste site, while (click) treated landfill leachate and centrate removed from the biosolids are returned for further processing.
The expertise involved in developing and managing Edmonton’s advanced waste management systems is accessible through the Edmonton Waste Management Centre of Excellence. This is a non-profit partnership of key organizations from the public and private sectors. This unusual partnership provides us with unparalleled access to cutting edge facilities and experts that range from University researchers to hands-on operators. Visit our website for more information or contact myself or the Executive Manager, Jerry Leonard, by e-mail.
The Centre has four program areas: Research, Technology Development, Advisory Services, and Education and Training. For more information about any of these, please visit our website or contact myself or the Executive Manager, Jerry Leonard, by e-mail.

The vision of Masdar City (the world’s first zero-carbon city to be created before 2020) was shared by the Masdar City team at a September 16, 2009, business-to-business seminar held at MaRS.
The seminar attracted nearly 70 cleantech suppliers, green technology leaders, government policy makers and sector funders. This presentation is from Edmonton's Waste Management Centre of Excellence, created for this seminar. less
