Weekly news from wcumc July 6 2014

  1. 1. Weekly News from WCUMC-7/06/2014 “God’s Spirit-Filled People” A Sermon Series on Acts “We’re ALL in Ministry Together” Acts 6:1-7 Acts 6:1-7 About that time, while the number of disciples continued to increase, a complaint arose. Greek-speaking disciples accused the Aramaic-speaking disciples because their widows were being overlooked in the daily food service. The Twelve called a meeting of all the disciples and said, “It isn’t right for us to set aside proclamation of God’s word in order to serve tables. Brothers and sisters, carefully choose seven well-respected men from among you. They must be well-respected and endowed by the Spirit with exceptional wisdom. We will put them in charge of this concern. As for us, we will devote ourselves to prayer and the service of proclaiming the word.” This proposal pleased the entire community. They selected Stephen, a man endowed by the Holy Spirit with exceptional faith, Philip, Prochorus, Nicanor, Timon, Parmenas, and Nicolaus from Antioch, a convert to Judaism. The community presented these seven to the apostles, who prayed and laid their hands on them. God’s word continued to grow. The number of disciples in Jerusalem increased significantly. Even a large group of priests embraced the faith. The Holy Spirit is in control, even when God’s people are in tension… … while the number of disciples continued to increase, a complaint arose. Greek-speaking disciples accused the Aramaic-speaking disciples because their widows were being overlooked in the daily food service.
  2. 2. Godly wisdom provides the way. The Twelve called a meeting of all the disciples and said, “It isn’t right for us to set aside proclamation of God’s word in order to serve tables. 3Brothers and sisters, carefully choose seven well-respected men from among you. Godly Qualifications for Christian Leadership (v. 3) 1. Well Respected 2. Endowed by the Spirit 3. Exceptional Wisdom The Body of Christ is meant to be a partnership of ministers under the Lordship of Jesus Christ 1 Corinthians 12:12, 27 Christ is just like the human body—a body is a unit and has many parts; and all the parts of the body are one body, even though there are many… …You are the body of Christ and parts of each other. Ephesians 4:11-12 He gave some apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, and some pastors and teachers. 12His purpose was to equip God’s people for the work of serving and building up the body of Christ … As the church prays for and confirms the ministry of God’s people… the Holy Spirit empowers the church and its mission. Acts 6:6-7 The community presented these seven to the apostles, who prayed and laid their hands on them. God’s word continued to grow. The number of disciples in Jerusalem increased significantly… For Personal or Group Reflection 1. Think of the ministries of this congregation. What responsibilities would you gladly give up? Never give up? Share with others? 2. How could the widows (in this passage) have been neglected? Do you know of widows who are being neglected? Who? How? 3. Why were the “seven” to be well-respected, endowed by the spirit, with exceptional wisdom? 4. Why were these tasks of service given such attention? 5. Were the “Twelve” too good to be doing the serving of the widows? Why were they looking for others to take on such tasks? How does that apply to our congregation and the Church today? Next Week’s Message 6:8-7:30 Pastor Rick Vinther preaching
