BAUDRILLARD• Baudrillard has a lot to say on the topic of postmodern media• He has been extremely influential in the development of the theoretical movement called „postmodernism‟• Postmodernism can be found everywhere – TV, films, magazines, buildings, novels, theatre• He is a controversial figure within media and cultural studies – many people admire his work, many people despise his work• We need to get to grips with some of his key ideas
  • 5. BAUDRILLARD – SOME KEY IDEAS• 9/11 was a TV event• The Gulf War „91 did not happen• Reality has imploded into the media• We now live in media-saturated societies• We now have a media made reality – what we know (or think we know) about many things – e.g. the Queen
  • 6. BAUDRILLARD – SOME KEY IDEAS• Media made reality – a world where the media shapes our understanding of the world around us (what is happening, what is important or unimportant) and ultimately shapes our understanding of ourselves • Greek debt / Eurozone crisis • Global warming • London Olympics • The death of Colonel Gaddafi • The „Arab Spring‟ • War in Afghanistan• The old rules of semiotics (denotation, connotation) have been abolished – signs don’t haver meanings• Representations / images ( or simulacra in Baudrillard-speak) have no relationship to reality• Is all of this true / correct?
