Ballet

  1. 1. Ballet
  2. 2. Introduction
  3. 3. •At first, ballet was created by the Italian Balthasar de Beaujoyeulx. It was the “Ballet comique de la reine Louise”, at the Palais de Louvre (Louvre Palace) in France. •Ballet dancing appeared in the renaissance, a more elaborate form of dance that was called back then “the ballet comique” or comic ballet, where comic meant “theatrical”.
  4. 4. Classic Ballet •A classic ballet tells a story with characters in costume. Tutu and toe shoes are the standard costume of the classical dancer. •It is based on two great concepts: turnout, that is, that the legs and feet are turned outward, and the five positions, from which all steps start and end. .
  5. 5. The Five Positions
  6. 6. Modern Dance •The dance does not really have a story, but rather an atmosphere that expresses ideas and feelings. Dancers may wear a skin-tight leotard, giving the impression of nudity, or everyday clothes, or fantasy costumes. Shoes are not necessary; people often dance barefoot. Also dancers can bend down, fall, or move along the floor, depending on what feelings they wish to express.
  7. 7. The Qualities of a Dancer •A dance class is a total physical workout, requiring technique, balance. •In dance, you must seek out balance in your spirit as well as in your body.
  8. 8. The Dance Studio •The floor is made of wood or is covered with linoleum. It permits you to move and land softly after you jump. •The walls are covered with mirrors. They permit you to watch yourself in order for you to correct bad placement. •Along the length of one wall, there are two bars to give you support for certain exercises. •The dressing room, where you change your clothes before and after class.
  9. 9. The Dance Class Outfit Girls wear a leotard and tights with pink ballet slippers of leather or satin, held on the foot by an elastic; satin ribbons might be tied around the ankle if preferable. Tutu and toe shoes might be used for later. The hair must be tied up in a bun or in braids around the head. Boys’ dress is traditionally sober: black tights and a white T-shirt with black or white ballet slippers of thin leather, held on the foot by an elastic.
  10. 10. Summary •A short history of ballet. • Classic ballet. • The five positions in ballet. •The modern dance. • The qualities of a ballet dancer. • The dance studio components. • The class outfits.
