    4. Metering • 100% water metering – Metro San Diego • Irrigation & buildings both metered • Monthly reporting of data • Data analysis • Field checks • Corrective action • Metering is critical to measuring performance and focusing resources on most important water conservation opportunities! Navy Region Southwest 4
    5. Reducing Building Water Use • Improving fixtures and equipment – Installed 225 waterless urinals – Planning installation of 160 ultra-low flow urinals – Installed 6,000 1.5 gpm showerheads – Installed 5,500 faucet aerators • Enforcing best water management practices • Training Building Monitors • Monitoring buildings’ water performance Navy Region Southwest 5
    6. Reducing Building Water Use Navy Region Southwest 6
    7. Using Data to Save Water • Analyze data to detect apparent anomalies, trends, billing errors, etc. • Follow up to see what is causing anomalies • Correct problems found • Use data to ensure problems resolved Navy Region Southwest 7
    8. Irrigation • Installed irrigation in Metro San Diego is metered • Focus on reduction during last several years • Best opportunity for conservation – Technology improvements – Coordination with landscape contractors Navy Region Southwest 8
    9. Irrigation • Actions – Irrigation Manager position – Improving irrigation infrastructure and controls past two years at Metro San Diego installations (~$2.5M) – Scientifically managing irrigation • Refine irrigation schedules • Match to plant types; appropriate fertilizing – Replacing turf with smart landscaping, desert landscaping, artificial turf, etc. – Using “stakeholder” teams to improve irrigation practices – Closely monitoring irrigation water use – Winter shut-down of systems Navy Region Southwest 9
    10. Reducing Irrigation Water Use Smart & Desert Landscaping: • NAS Fallon replaced 95% of turf with desert landscaping (top right) to save 236 million gallons • All Region bases implementing xeriscaping – project at Naval Base Ventura County shown at right • Smart landscaping project at NAB Coronado, bottom right • NAS Lemoore using recycled tires to replace turf areas (bottom) Navy Region Southwest 10
