  • 2. WHAT IS THE CANADIAN SOLARCITIES PROJECT?  A Canadian registered non-profit corporation.  Dedicated to recognizing and promoting the most sustainable Canadian communities that utilize renewable energy.  A focus on solar technologies and achievements.
  • 3. OUR BOARD OF DIRECTORS From Left to Right Walter, Cheryl, Emanuel, Bob, Melanie
  • 4. HOW DO COMMUNITIES QUALIFY?  Canadian communities who meet our 10-point set of criteria qualify for designation.  Community representatives complete an on- line application form and send it in for assessment of the criteria.  Assistance can be provided to complete the form or to create an action plan to meet the criteria.
  • 5. WHAT ARE SOME OF THE CRITERIA? 1. The municipality has a climate change plan with short-term and long-term targets and time- frames in place 2. The municipality has a community energy plan in place. 3. The municipality has an energy plan in place for its own facilities. 4. The municipality has adopted targets for a proportion of total community energy demand to be met by renewable energy. 5. The municipality has established policies and incentives for solar electricity and solar thermal utilization for residential homeowners.
  • 6. WHY SOLAR CITIES?  The Solar Cities program is recognized all over the world with governments or non- profit groups setting the criteria.  Local governments have the best opportunity to lead change and set climate change mitigation policies through internal policies.  The Solar City project provides a local focus for citizen involvement in renewable energy projects.
  • 7. WHY SOLAR?  The Sun is the most abundant energy source on the planet.  Solar technologies are becoming much more affordable.  Solar energy is clean energy.  There is an abundant supply of Solar Energy in North East BC.
