These 5.6 million people come from several different ethnic backgrounds. </li></ul><ul><li>According to data gathered from 2000 U.S. Census: Caucasian, or white people, make up about 80 percent of the state’s population. </li></ul><ul><li>Memphis has the highest population of the state. </li></ul><ul><li>Tennessee has the12 th highest population of African Americans. </li></ul>
