Presenation of interactive and innovative Digital Research tool to browse data in the visual way with some requirements:
● Online presentation of strikes events should make its easy to track
and retrieve relevant data
● “Linked Data in action”: data from research datasets (Strikes
Database) and news articles (metadata) from the the Royal Library
(KB) linked together in order to create Semantic Web view
● Should help to answer researcher's questions in the most easiest way
by appropriate visualization of specific variables
● Should provide clear explanation of historical events by online
visualization tools like charts, maps and timelines
● To present data trends that may lead to new insights about facts and
events

  • 1. Vyacheslav Tykhonov Data visualization expert, Software developer, International Institute of Social History (IISH), vty (at) iisg.nl Kalliope Zervanou Researcher, Radboud University Nijmegen, k.zervanou (at) let.ru.nl Antal van den Bosch Full professor, Centre for Language Studies and CIW- BC,Faculty of Arts, Radboud University Nijmegen a.vandenbosch (at) let.ru.nl Marien van der Heijden Project Manager, International Institute of Social History mvh (at) isg.nl Visualization of Labour Conflicts in the Netherlands HiTIME and ISHER, Digging into Data
  • 2. Project challenge • Development of interactive and innovative Digital Research tool to browse data in the visual way • Online presentation of strikes events should make its easy to track and retrieve relevant data • “Linked Data in action”: data from research datasets (Strikes Database) and news articles (metadata) from the the Royal Library (KB) linked together in order to create Semantic Web view • Should help to answer researcher's questions in the most easiest way by appropriate visualization of specific variables • Should provide clear explanation of historical events by online visualization tools like charts, maps and timelines • To present data trends that may lead to new insights about facts and events
  • 3. Entry Point http://node-195.dev.socialhistoryservices.org/strikes/
  • 4. Data Sources • The IISG Strikes database is a secondary historical resource created by the historian Dr. Sjaak van der Velden (13721 records up to 2008) https://collab.iisg.nl/web/labourconflicts/tabel • Newspapers archive from the National Library of Netherlands (KB) is an online collection of digitized Dutch daily newspapers dating from 1618 to 1995 (the digitized data is in XML format, following Dublin Core [5] metadata standards.) http://www.kb.nl •
  • 5. Research dataset: IISG Strikes database
  • 6. Publications Source News Articles from the National Library
  • 7. Linked Data • Strike events that defined and described in the Strikes DB linked to the news articles digitized by National Library (KB) • Every link created by linking algorithm can be evaluated by hands or automatically • Wrong links can be changed or removed from the system • Correct links between events and articles can be exported in RDF/DCAT for further processing by Semantic Web tools supporting SPARQL (in progress)
  • 8. Robust and Interactive Web Interface Chart view - interface for interactive two-dimensional view of linked aggregated data in terms of time Map view - interface for interactive three-dimensional view of linked aggregated data in spacio-temporal terms Timeline view - interface presenting interactive timeline and providing access to/retrieval of linked news publications from Royal Library
  • 9. News Articles aggregated in time
  • 10. Online Visualization Tips Online Libraries  Charts: Open Flash, D3.js  Timeline: Timeline.js  Map: StatPlanet  Daily Calendar: Cal-HeatMap Color schemas  Strikes (blue)  News articles (red)
  • 11. 12 variables from Strikes Database visualized in time and space Sector: industrial sector affected Duur: strike duration in calendar days AantalStakers: number of strike participants GestaakteDagen: man-days of strike lost, in terms of man hours AantalBetrokkenBedrijven: number of companies involved Voornamelijk: type of workers group involved, e.g. women, young workers, immigrants, etc. Beroep: type of profession involved Bond: trade union involved Eisen: reason of the strike Uitkomst: result of the strike (successful, unsuccessful, settled, etc) Karakter: strike character, i.e. supported by a union, or spontaneous Bedrijf: companies or other type of working place entities involved
  • 12. Visualization of database variables in time: companies involved in strikes (line view)
  • 13. Linked Data Objectives  Interactive views of linked aggregated data (charts, bars, graphs, pies, map)  Interactive visual access to the linked data (timelines for new publications)  User is able to zoom in the detailed values of a year, a month or a week  Interface types interconnected, so users can easily pass from one view (chart, map, timeline) to the other
  • 14. Visualization of database variable: result of strikes (pie view)
  • 15. Map view in time for strikes database
  • 16. Year view by months for strikes database, 1977
  • 17. Visualization of database variables in time: trade unions (trend lines)
  • 18. Year/Month view by days for strikes database with links to description of events
  • 19. Timeline for News Publications from National Library linked with event description from Strikes Database, January, 1900
  • 20. Thank you! That's all! Try our visualization here http://node-195.dev.socialhistoryservices.org/strikes/ and feel free to ask questions.
