Functional skills help young people to take a more active and responsible role in their communities, to communicate effectively and be literate in the broadest sense. The functional skills standards require learners to be able to make sense of their world and to develop their own perspectives. The key concepts of competence and critical understanding underpin these aims. Multimodal texts: Multimodal texts combine two or more modes of communication (eg written, aural and visual) to create meaning. Examples include the combination of words and images in a newspaper or magazine, the combination of words, images, video clips and sound on a website or CD-ROM, or the combination of images, speech and sound in moving-image texts. New authors: pupils will continue to study Shakespeare plays and sonnets as well as the canon of pre-20th century literary classics including Charles Dickens, Jane Austen and George Eliot. The new curriculum will also suggest a new list of contemporary authors such as Benjamin Zephaniah, Philip Pullman, and Bill Bryson.

Late Framework Changes Heinemann has pledged to incorporate any late changes to the Framework into all of its new Key Stage 3 materials. This ensures that teachers and learners are provided with the most up-to-date and relevant information and support.
