Mail in a browserWeb DevelopmentSee the source code and edit it tooKnow the page display sizeDragon Fly and OperaNot so small but significant featuresIntroductionWelcome to the small world of Opera web browser. This book is notintended to be a user guide of Opera or a tour to get started. This bookdoesnt teach you how to use a web browser to go to a website. But thisbook is all about using the existing features on the browser to itsmaximum. This book is intended to speed up your web browsingexperience by intelligent use of features. Most people are aware of manyfeatures in a web browser but rarely use them. To be honest I am also amember of that "most". In this book I share the issues I faced whilebrowsing Internet and features in Opera that helps to overcome those. In anutshell this is a no nonsense guide to speed up the Internet browsingexperience from a practical user perspective. I have covered the not sowidely used search options, different techniques to navigate web pages, browsing in a slow or public environment and an introduction todeveloper options. I hope this book will present you a new view aboutusing features in your web browser.Coming to Opera, it has two different interfaces for Windows users. Theminimalistic single menu and the traditional menu bar.
These can be toggled using the Show/Hide Menu Bar.The menus minimalistic approach are mentioned as Opera > throughoutthe book. This book is based on version 12 of Opera but most featuresmentioned in this book are there in Opera for years. This book doesntcover the Linux version of Opera. But almost all features mentioned inthis book are applicable to Linux version also.Search on your desktop for all questions"So I say to you, Ask and it will be given to you; search, and youwill find; knock, and the door will be opened for you"- Jesus Christ.Quick searches can make your journey on the web easier and efficient.Anyone who spends a lot of time on Internet prefers quick, easy andeffective searches. No wonder how Google turned out to be this big. Interms of browsers Opera is one the most search friendly browser. Itprovides many search options not just with search engines but onwebpages as well. This section explains how shortcuts in Opera can makesearch more productive and streamlined.Search any site from address barAlmost everyones day on internet starts with a search. I use to searchmultiple search sites like Wikipedia, Amazon or Ebay other than Google.
Opera has nice trick to save time by allowing search from address barusing a shortcut. For example to search about iPhone 5 on Google I use giPhone 5 and in case I am searching Wikipedia for same, I use w iPhone5.Wikipedia search using shortcut w is shown in the above image. Operadisplays the site it searches and suggestions are also shown. Searching fora text on the page can be done by using the shortcut f. For example tosearch iPhone on the current page use f iPhone. The search shortcuts can be viewed by clicking on the drop search box ontop right of the tab. These shortcuts can be edited using Manage SearchEngines. Custom searches can be created easily with and shortcuts can beadded. The next section explains the trick.Add any Search to address barI was planning to buy a book and started to Barnes & Noble. I wanted toadd the search field to my Opera address bar, so whenever I want tosearch I can do it from there itself. Opera allows adding custom searchfrom websites search box. It allows adding shortcuts so different search
engines can be searched from address bar itself. This is how it is done.In the search box of the website, Right click > click Create Search. Thisopens the search engine box.Enter the name and add the keyword that is used as shortcut from theaddress bar.To search the Barnes & Noble site using the shortcut just created type bnsearch word. For example to search about books about web technologiesuse bn web.
This opens the website with searched page. From our example this opensBarnes & Noble website with page showing search results on web.Click on manage search engines to change the options for the addedsearch engine. Search engine preferences can be modified from Opera >Settings > Preferences or Tools > Preferences from menu bar. If you are aprogrammer add the search box of developer site to opera and see how
much time can be saved by these quick searches. On a Mac preferences can be opened from Opera > Preferences.Searching for a link in an article can be cumbersome particularly if thepage has lot of text and links. For search inside a page Opera candifferentiate between text and link. The next section how a quick searchcan be made with this.Search links and textOne day quite out of curiosity I started reading about Pizza and foundfrom Wikipedia that it was originated in Naples in Italy. I felt it may havesome connection with the history of Naples and thought of following thelink. Opera can help in these scenarios. It can search text as well as links. It is very useful in this kind of scenario where one has to search a link tofollow the article. This is how I accomplished the task. I can use "," (comma) for only linksand "." (period) for searching text. As I needed the link for the particularpage I used "," (comma) shortcut. For searching for a word on a page Ctrl + F can be used to bring thesearch box. It can also be done by using shortcut keyword f from addressbar. On a Mac for search, shortcut is command + F.Other than these above shortcuts search can be initiated from the searchbox on the tab as well as from speed dial. One can set a different searchengine in search box and speed dial. This allows further searchcustomization as well.
What is speed dial?Speed dial is opera term for visual bookmark that appears when a tab isopened. This allows easy access to websites with a click rather thantyping the web address. User can add a website to speed dial by clickingon the square speed dial box.Navigation - Moving around"Do just once what others say you cant do, and you willnever pay attention to their limitations again"- James Cook.Navigating in Internet is like driving a car. Web browsers like cars haveton lot on features to assist in navigating on the Internet. But when andhow to use these feature is more important aspect. Opera is one of themost feature rich browsers in the globe. In this section I try to explain thelikely overlooked features and when to use them using real lifeexperience. I am confident that this will be most useful section in thisbook.
