As to when and an affordable laptop with style and good functionality. Detailshow this might happen is not something we know, but from inside.our understanding itll happen before Intel integrates USB 3.0support into its chipsets.Sadly we cant reveal all the information at hand, as not onlywould we cause problems for our source, but also the entirecompany in question, but suffice to say, Apple has been lookinginto USB 3.0 host controllers, especially as the price has finallyreached an affordable level. A USB 3.0 host controller is pricedat somewhere between US$2-3 in large quantities today whichshould be compared to US$10-15 for Intels Thunderbolt chip. Its also important to remember that Thunderbolt not onlyrequires a host chip, but also a device chip and additionalchips on the device end depending on the type of device. This makes Thunderbolt a very expensive solution for simplestorage device etc.For this simple reason it makes sense that Apple is consideringimplementing USB 3.0 support into its products, especially asthe device end is very simple and equally affordable, if not evencheaper than the host end. USB 3.0 can of course not matchthe performance of a device connected over Thunderbolt, but that level of performance is often not required by theconsumer market and Apple is seemingly catering more andmore towards consumer. September 1st, 2011 Published by: VR-ZoneThe 14-inch Lenovo IdeaPad U400 looks extremelystylish with round edges and from its exterior design, it isinevitable to draw comparisons with the renowned AppleMacBook Pro. According to the company, the U400 we seehere is a prototype unit. Its chassis is made of aluminiumwhich makes it fairly durable and comes in graphite grey at thispress time. The laptop has spacious palm rest, a huge multi-touch touchpad with left/right clickable buttons and uses achiclet-styled keyboard for comfortable typing. The power button is on the top left corner of the keyboard, and we did not find any notification LEDs as the body is one piece aluminium. Needless to say, it is impossible to replace the battery or even upgrade the memory modules without having to void the units warranty. Looking at the dxdiag.exe information, the U400 is equipped with 2.2GHz Intel Core i3-2330M, 2GB DDR3 memory and ATI Radeon graphics. The Lenovo IdeaPad U400 is currently available as an exclusive bundle with StarHub MaxInfinity Ultimate 100Mbps fibre home broadband plan (S$99.30 per month). In terms of battery life, Samsung claims an impressive 9h on a single charge and the company goes on to say that its "Life Plus" battery technology keeps 80 percent of the cells original capacity for up to 1,500 re-charge cycles. As such Samsung claims that its batteries can last up to five times as long as some of its competitors. This is all great stuff, but the real selling point of the Series 7 in our opinion is that Samsung has managed to squeeze a larger screen size into a smaller notebook size. As such, the model with a 14-inch screen is the size of a 13.3-inch notebook, the model with the 15-inch screen the size of a 14- inch notebook and the model with the 15.6-inch screen the size of a 15-inch notebook. If that wasnt good enough, Samsung is offering 1600x900 resolution panels across the board, all sporting 300nits brightness. It gets even better though, as all four models have matt screens, which is a really welcomed 8

Although the Hardcards as they were known as, are long since history it looks like well once again shove hard drives into our expansion slots, at least if OCZ has anything to do with it. Early details from the Flash Memory Summit last year suggested that OCZ was working on a hard drive caching solution using a RevoDrive with a pair of SATA connectors on it, but apparently this idea was scrapped in favour of the RevoDrive Hybrid. We almost forgot to mention that the keyboards features bluebacklight and that Samsung has of course implemented a pairof USB 3.0 ports and a slot-loaded optical drive in all models. The trackpad is also massive and very similar to the one found OCZ demoed an early version of the RevoDrive Hybrid back aton Apples MacBooks. If you wanted to use more power from a USB port than 2.5W you could choose to use two USB plugs, as often is the case with external 2.5-inch hard drives, alternatively, an external power supply could provide the additional power. Now, with the introduction of USB 3.0, the current capability was raised up to 900mA for super-speed ports, almost doubling the power delivery capability. Meanwhile, an additional feature was added to the USB standard in order to provide more power to connected devices, in particular to be able to charge battery operated handheld devices. The new standard is known as the “Battery Charger Standard” and in late December last year, V1.2 was released, which allows currents beyond 1.5A, up to a maximum of 5A, resulting in a power delivery capability up to 25W. The boardretail. has four x16 PCI Express slots and if you have a chassis with eight or more rear expansion slots, you can fit four graphics cards to this board thanks to a sensible slot layout. Gigabyte didnt add any eSATA ports to the UD7, but once again we noticed a couple of Fresco Logic USB 3.0 host controller.Starting at the top we have the G1.Assassin 2 X79 and thebiggest surprise here really is the re-designed heatsinks whichare much less in your face than the current models. Thatsaid, Gigabyte might very well change this before the board islaunching, but well just have to wait and see if well get a gunthemed heatsink or not on the final boards. Expected featuresinclude a Killer NIC, Creative X-Fi audio and 3-way SLI andCrossFireX support. We also spotted a Marvell controller for apair of eSATAp (eSATA/USB combo) ports and a Fresco LogicUSB 3.0 host controller on the board. One feature we couldntfigure out what its for is the blue and green button on therear below the 4GHz overclock button, although it could besome kind of BIOS switch to select between the primary andsecondary BIOS. For those wanting to use more than four DIMMs the GA-X79- UD5 is the way to go, as this board sports a total of eight DIMM slots. This is a more well-rounded motherboard in terms of features, although it still has space for up to three graphics cards. Around the back were looking at one eSATAp and one eSATA port as well as a pair of USB 3.0 ports and even a FireWire port for those that still utilize this interface. If the UD5 is priced right, wed expect this to be the most popular model among Gigabytes X79 boards.Next up we have the GA-X79-UD7 and as you mightve noticedfrom the colour scheme and the Gigabyte OC logo on thechipset heatsink, this is the next generation overclockingboard from Gigabyte, despite the model name. All boards will as such have two SATA 6Gbps ports and four SATA 3Gbps ports, but beyond this we dont really know what Gigabyte will offer. We spotted additional Marvell chips for a pair of extra SATA ports on some of the boards and its very likely that Gigabyte will add more than just a pair of additional SATA 6Gbps ports to all of its X79 boards. Well make sure we get a closer look at the new boards come November, as by then Gigabyte should have close to final boards to show us. The missing model that wasnt on display at IDF should be the GA-X79-D3, but we dont have any details about this model as yet. Weve added a few additional pictures on the next page as well.
