The Beginning <ul><li>Rural Health Data Council is an outgrowth of the Virginia Rural Health Plan Data and Rural Definitions Work Group </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Plan originally developed to comply with Critical Access Hospital program requirements </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>HRSA required states to revise plan </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Virginia chose to include all aspects of rural health </li></ul></ul>

Rural Health Data Council <ul><li>Major objective of the Work Group was to define “Rural” so as to set the frame work for the plan </li></ul><ul><li>Among charges was to develop on-line data tool that could be used to highlight Virginia’s rural health issues </li></ul><ul><li>Defined 32 data points/sets that should be included </li></ul><ul><li>Council members created “dream” site features with goal to achieve in five years </li></ul>

Rural Health Data Portal is Born <ul><li>Funds used from FLEX grant to provide seed money </li></ul><ul><li>Technical Assistance sought from Virginia Economic Bridge (VEB) and VaNGHR </li></ul><ul><li>Website launched mid-November 2009 </li></ul><ul><li>Much of “dream” goals met </li></ul><ul><li>Work in progress </li></ul>

Data Sources <ul><li>Virginia Department of Health (disease, vital statistics) </li></ul><ul><li>Virginia Department of Health Professions (manpower) </li></ul><ul><li>Virginia Health Information (facility, quality data) </li></ul><ul><li>Weldon Cooper Center for Public Service (population, demographics) </li></ul><ul><li>Virginia Employment Commission (demographics) </li></ul><ul><li>Virginia Department of Education (educations, free lunches) </li></ul><ul><li>US Census (poverty data, demographics) </li></ul><ul><li>National Center for the Analysis of Health Data (manpower) </li></ul><ul><li>HRSA (MUA/HPSA data) </li></ul>

Previous Progress <ul><li>With the exception of the final goal regarding what amounts of the formation of Health Information Exchanges, all goals have been met </li></ul><ul><li>Isserman definition of rural has been accepted as the key definition of “Rural” </li></ul><ul><li>Data Portal was launched in November 2009 </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Will be a continuous work in progress </li></ul></ul>
  9. 9. 2010 Accomplishments <ul><li>Data Portal was selected for presentation at the ESRI 2010 Healthcare Conference in Denver Colorado </li></ul><ul><li>Technical upgrades, data glitches cleaned up </li></ul><ul><li>Appearance of charts and graphs improved, and summary data for multiple jurisdictions is now present </li></ul><ul><li>Registration page has been added to see who our users are </li></ul>

More Accomplishments <ul><li>GIS software has been upgraded twice </li></ul><ul><ul><li>New mapping site will be incorporated this week or next </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>New maps will be a little more customizable, easier to use, and not as cluttered </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Can print to .pdf files </li></ul></ul><ul><li>Much of the data has been updated to the most recent available (includes initial release of 2010 Census data) </li></ul><ul><li>More layers have been added </li></ul>
  11. 11. More Accomplishments <ul><li>More detail of quality indicators have been added to graphical and mapping side or portal </li></ul><ul><li>Quality data from hospitals and nursing homes included on graphical side </li></ul><ul><li>Data archiving </li></ul>

Future Direction <ul><li>Expand geospatial layers and data sets for workforce, disease prevalence data </li></ul><ul><li>Side by side comparisons </li></ul><ul><li>Real time updates </li></ul><ul><li>Improved quality data/geospatial presentation </li></ul><ul><li>Add mental health, dental health, and EMS data </li></ul><ul><li>User created map library </li></ul>
