  • The first point I want to cover is enabling collaborative decision making. This is about infusing the right mix of collaborative services into the applications and processes people use to do their jobs. Whether that's an IBM Lotus collaborative dashboard, a web portal, or a business application, combining elements and supporting with analytics to bring focus to the information, expertise, and insight needed to do the job, delivered in the way people work best – rather than in a collection of tools the worker must jump between. It is estimated that productivity drops as much as 40% and it can take, on average, 20 minutes to get back on track when interrupted and forced to refocus one’s attention. With that in mind, it’s easy to see that a unified experience can help individuals make better decisions more quickly in order to achieve better outcomes for the business.
  • Project Vulcan is the name of a vision we announced at Lotusphere, and is the key enabler to deliver Exceptional Work Experiences These are the four core principles which guide how we realize the vision and the technologies we bring to market in our products and offerings Vulcan is a multi-year far-reaching project in which we ensure that concrete work maps to these principles In 2011 we're focused mainly on building the foundation for Vulcan, which includes some compelling new cross-product capability The four principles are: Innovation : we're building innovative UIs and leveraging analytics to simplify the usage of multiple products and improve attention management and mining of insight from data Example: recommendations leveraging social media contributions Convergence : we're aligning overlapping efforts and providing consistency across cloud and on-premises offerings as well as across devices Example: designing for mobile as part of the initial design process Opportunity : we're driving consistency across existing extension points and providing clear blueprints for new extensibility across all Vulcan-related capability Example: developers toolkit starting with the aggregator and river of news Continuity : we're placing a very high value on evolving and innovating on our existing product set and maintaining compatibility with existing applications Example: Vulcan is not a product, but drives deep integration via embedded experiences and share box
  • The principles of Project Vulcan drive the choices, user experience and capability which we are building These in turn enable Exceptional Work Experiences through a number of specific results and directions shown here Productivity increases through being able to act from a consistent interface and by leveraging analytics to provide improved attention management and filtering Example: common homepage has a range of capabilities including river of news and embedded experiences Get up and running faster via cloud delivery of services, zero-install clients and services and capabilities which fit together more smoothly Example: security blueprints we're implementing across our products Compose your optimal solution through independence of delivery models and modular integration and consistency across services Example: first-class web and mobile clients Leverage open standards and consistent extensibility across products and delivery models to reduce the cost and increase the value of a wide range of extensions Example: SAML, OAuth and OpenSocial among others
