Guillaume’s life <ul><li>He was born the 5 th August 1397 in Beersel, near Brussels </li></ul><ul><li>He was a franco-flemish composer of the Early Renaissance </li></ul><ul><li>He lived in Cambrai until 1420, when he left the city </li></ul><ul><li>He returned to Cambrai in 1440 </li></ul><ul><li>He remained in Cambrai until his death, in the 27 th November 1474 </li></ul>
  4. 4. Dufay’s family <ul><li>He was an illegitimate child </li></ul><ul><li>His father was an unknown priest </li></ul><ul><li>His mother was a woman called Marie Du Fayt </li></ul><ul><li>She died in 1444 </li></ul>

Music and influence <ul><li>Dufay was one of the most influential composers of the 15 th century </li></ul><ul><li>The composers of the nexts generations absorbed some elements of his style </li></ul><ul><li>His compositions were mainly of the common forms of the day, like masses, motets, Magnificats and hymns </li></ul><ul><li>He also wrote simple chant settings in fauxbourdon, and antiphons. </li></ul>

Masses <ul><li>He was one of the first composers in writing a cyclic mass, because in his infancy it started to be used, but at the end of his career it was one of the most important music </li></ul><ul><li>He made a lot of masses, but his best cyclic mass were this </li></ul><ul><li>Missa sine nomine </li></ul><ul><li>Missa S Jacobi </li></ul><ul><li>Missa Ave Regina </li></ul>

Motets <ul><li>Dufay motets seem not be for a liturgical use, but they were written for special ocassions, ussualy for ceremonies. </li></ul><ul><li>Their style was isorythm </li></ul><ul><li>Some parts of the motets had in themselves a symbolic value, such as the Nuper Rosarum Flores </li></ul><ul><li>His last motet was the Fulgens iubar in 1447 </li></ul>
  8. 8. Chant settings and fauxbourdon <ul><li>Many dufay’s compositions were simple setting of chant </li></ul><ul><li>He was the first composer to design the technique of paralel writing as fauxbourdon </li></ul>

Secular music <ul><li>Most of his secular music follow the formed fixes (rondeau, ballade and virelai) </li></ul><ul><li>He also wrote a lot of italian ballates </li></ul><ul><li>His songs have three voices and the predominat voice is the first </li></ul><ul><li>A typical ballade is Resvellies vous et faites chiere lye, which was written in 1423 </li></ul>
