Introduction
• The context: production of 2D technical illustrations within
the standards of the Aerospace & Defense sectors
• S1000D and ATA iSpec 2200
• Projects expect illustrations that are fit-for-purpose and
specifications compliant
• File validation against CGM profiles
• Visual inspection against style and format rules
• We insist on valid XML for exchange, we must expect the
same for graphical content

Focus on CGM
• CGM: a standard for the storage and exchange of 2D vector
graphics, raster graphics and text defined by ISO/IEC 8632
• The CGM format is a very complex way to describe a 2D vector
drawing
• The core ISO CGM specification includes everything you should ever
need to define a drawing
• The core ISO CGM specification also includes many features and
concepts that you will rarely need…
• To make sense of the complexity, CGM Profiles limit or extend the
core ISO CGM specification

What is a CGM profile?
• CGM Profiles may be layered to further refine the CGM
definition…

What is a CGM profile?
• A CGM profile contains up to 170 requirement clauses for CGM content
• A further 21 requirements for CGM generators and viewers
• ‘Simple’ example:

• Each specification demands profile
compliance, but what about the style
and format of the illustration?
• S1000D devotes 72 pages to the
visual style while ATA iSpec 2200
manages 165 pages…

• These presentation requirements are NOT handled by CGM
profile compliance!
• The style and format are classed as illustration business rules
• Definitions for:

 ICN/GNBR format
 Line and edge weights
 Font sizes
 Hotspot definitions
