Over 125 surgicalinstruments were in use. The use ofanesthesia was also known in ancient India. 10
    11. 11. Astronomy is one area which has fascinated all mankind from thebeginnings of history. In India the first references to astronomy are tobe found in the Rig Veda (which is dated around 6000-9000 BCE).Vedic Aryans saw divinity in the Sun, Stars and Comets. Astronomywas then interwoven with astrology and since ancient times Indianshave involved the planets (called Grahas) with the determination ofhuman fortunes. Ancient Indian astronomers had recognized thatstars are same as the sun, that the sun is center of the universe(solar system) and that the circumference of the earth is 5000Yojanas. One Yojana being 7.2 kms., the ancient Indian estimatescame close to the actual 11 figure.

    16. 16. India contributed to the number system by the number 0, innovated by Aryabhatta. Algebra, Trigonometry and Calculus originated in India. The quadratic equation was solved by Sridharacharya in the 11 century. The Greeks and Romans contented themselves with rather small numbers, while Hindusused units as big as 10 raised to the power 53 with specific names as early as 6000-9000 BCE. during the Vedic period. The place value system, the decimal system was developed in India dating back to at least 100 BC. The solar year was calculated as 365.25875684 days by Bhaskaracharya in the 5th century, hundreds of years before the astronomer Smart. The value of pi was first calculated by Bodhayana, who also discovered the Pythagorean Theorem in the 6th century, long before the European mathematicians. 16

    19. 19. ARYABHATT MASTER ASTRONOMER AND MATHEMATICIANBorn in 476 CE in Kusumpur ( Bihar ), Aryabhatts intellectual brilliance remapped the boundariesof mathematics and astronomy. In 499 CE, at the age of 23, he wrote a text on astronomy and anunparallel treatise on mathematics called "Aryabhatiyam." He formulated the process ofcalculating the motion of planets and the time of eclipses. Aryabhatt was the first to proclaim thatthe earth is round, it rotates on its axis, orbits the sun and is suspended in space - 1000 yearsbefore Copernicus published his heliocentric theory. He is also acknowledged for calculating p (Pi)to four decimal places: 3.1416 and the sine table in trigonometry. Centuries later, in 825 CE, theArab mathematician, Mohammed Ibna Musa credited the value of Pi to the Indians, "This valuehas been given by the Hindus." And above all, his most spectacular contribution was the conceptof zero without which modern computer technology would have been non-existent. Aryabhatt wasa colossus in the field of mathematics. 19
    20. 20. BHASKARACHARYA II GENIUS IN ALGEBRA• Born in the obscure village of Vijjadit (Jalgaon) in Maharastra, Bhaskaracharyas work in Algebra, Arithmetic and Geometry catapulted him to fame and immortality. His renowned mathematical works called "Lilavati" and "Bijaganita" are considered to be unparalled and a memorial to his profound intelligence. Its translation in several languages of the world bear testimony to its eminence. In his treatise " Siddhant Shiromani " he writes on planetary positions, eclipses, cosmography, mathematical techniques and astronomical equipment. In the " Surya Siddhant " he makes a note on the force of gravity: "Objects fall on earth due to a force of attraction by the earth. Therefore, the earth, planets, constellations, moon, and sun are held in orbit due to this attraction." Bhaskaracharya was the first to discover gravity, 500 years before Sir Isaac Newton . He was the champion among mathematicians of ancient and medieval India . His works fired the imagination of Persian and European 20 scholars, who through research on his works earned fame and popularity

He is believed to have been born in Prabhas Kshetra near Dwarika in Gujarat . He was the pioneer expounder of realism, law of causation and the atomic theory. He has classified all the objects of creation into nine elements, namely: earth, water, light, wind, ether, time, space, mind and soul. He says, "Every object of creation is made of atoms which in turn connect with each other to form molecules." His statement ushered in the Atomic Theory for the first time ever in the world, nearly 2500 years before John Dalton . Kanad has also described the dimension and motion of atoms and their chemical reactions with each other. The eminent historian, T.N. Colebrook , has said, "Compared to the scientists of Europe , Kanad and other 21 Indian scientists were the global masters of this field."
    22. 22. NAGARJUNA WIZARD OF CHEMICAL SCIENCEHe was an extraordinary wizard of science born in the nondescript village ofBaluka in Madhya Pradesh . His dedicated research for twelve years producedmaiden discoveries and inventions in the faculties of chemistry and metallurgy.Textual masterpieces like " Ras Ratnakar ," "Rashrudaya" and "Rasendramangal"are his renowned contributions to the science of chemistry. Where the medievalalchemists of England failed, Nagarjuna had discovered the alchemy oftransmuting base metals into gold. As the author of medical books like"Arogyamanjari" and "Yogasar," he also made significant contributions to the fieldof curative medicine. Because of his profound scholarliness and versatileknowledge, he was appointed as Chancellor of the famous University of Nalanda 22. Nagarjunas milestone discoveries impress and astonish the scientists of today.

He is venerated as the father of plastic surgery and the science ofanesthesia. When surgery was in its infancy in Europe , Sushrut was performing Rhinoplasty(restoration of a damaged nose) and other challenging operations. In the " Sushrut Samhita ," heprescribes treatment for twelve types of fractures and six types of dislocations. His details on humanembryology are simply amazing. Sushrut used 125 types of surgical instruments including scalpels, lancets, needles, Cathers and rectal speculums; mostly designed from the jaws of animals andbirds. He has also described a number of stitching methods; the use of horses hair as thread andfibers of bark. In the " Sushrut Samhita ," and fibers of bark. In the " Sushrut Samhita ," he details300 types of operations. The ancient Indians were the pioneers in amputation, caesarian and23 cranialsurgeries. Acharya Sushrut was a giant in the arena of medical science.

Because of his extrasensory observations and revelations on the secrets of creation, 27 is he recognized and saluted as the Father of Cosmology
    28. 28. DANCING SHIVAEach period of science has led to some model of nature. For classical science it was the clock ; fornineteenth century science, the period of industrial revolution , it was an engine running down .What will be the symbol for us ? What we have In mind perhaps be expressed by a reference tosculpture , from Indian or pre-Columbian art to our time. In some of the most beautifulmanifestations of sculpture, be it the dancing Shiva or in the miniature temples of Guerra, thereappears very clearly the search for a junction between stillness and motion , time arrested andtime passing . We believe that this confrontation will give our period its uniqueness. 28 “Order Out of Chaos” by Ilya Prigogine & Isabelle Stengers
