Transcript of "What is your favorite Quote and Why?"

  1. 1. What is your favorite quote? And why? What is your favorite quote? And why? A COMPILATION OF QUOTES THAT HAVE INSPIRED US… ALONG WITH OUR PERSPECTIVES Compiled by Arun Vemuri 1
  2. 2. What is your favorite quote? And why? Arun has succeeded to give us a common purpose with the favorite quote thread. It allied thousands of people generously sharing their best. A brilliant demonstration of networking. A brilliant demonstration of team spirit as well. You could see it when somebody came to threaten the process. They were quickly taken care of and neutralized. I enjoy the quotes coming from the fine people of a rare breed who shaped the world as we know the brightest side of it. They symbolize a concentrate of wisdom that touches the core in us, beyond race or religion. Most of them were not pure wordsmithery but the symbol of a eventful and meaningful life. Many a time, I could hilariously giggle for minutes and keep the mood for the hour or the day and at other times I would get into a meditative mode. Of course some quotes that seemed to mean much to many, meant little to me. That‘s the good side of diversity. I must confess, my email inbox was getting out of control with the LinkedIn messages from this thread and my blackberry chimed (too) many times. I considered stopping to follow the discussion and even did for short whiles, but then I started missing it again. The ―What is your favorite quote? And why?‖ goes on. If anything, I think it‘s been speeding up recently. So this titanic work will have to be updated fairly soon. Thank you Arun and the compiling team, for this wonderful project! For the rest of us, it is a lot of fun and a lot of learning. Mohamed Belarj Chief Executive Officer at Payment Systems Consulting ----------------------------- ―Here it is another GOOD example on how we human beings are so close and near to each other. Arun started a post and all of sudden he had persons around the world answering to his call. Was there any profit oriented motive? No. Just pure fun and joy of human participation! It is important to highlight that participants are persons with few time! It reinforces my feeling that we humans, we value more happiness concepts than profit as such! Which is good! Thank you and congratulations Arun and to ―your‖ TEAM that managed to make this e-book available for all of us! Keep on shinning to all of us so all of us can contribute for a better world!‖ Marco Cardoso Advisor of Board Members that are clients of CCO Consulting

And Why?‖, thousands of them who have since the time the discussion was started; have contributed to this fountain-head of inspiration. I thank Linkedin© for providing the platform and opportunity to connect to with such great individuals from across the globe. Uma Nair, my colleague who helped me in the task of compilation, by copy, pasting the quotes from the discussion forum (Who said copy-pasting was easier!); Vishal Das my ex- colleague, for a fabulous design and the onerous task of fine-tuning, and Vidushi Gupta a fellow networker who has spent lots of hours in compiling, formatting and editing the final output; are three individuals who have made this book a reality. I also would like to thank Olivier Taupin and Dr Cris Wildermuth for setting up and running a great discussion group in Linkedin©: HR # 1 Group where I posted the discussion. I gratefully acknowledge Wikipedia, from where we have taken the write-ups about the personalities. I personally also like to thank Uday Acharya, Mohammed Belarj, Marco Cardoso, Dr Meredith Gardner, Brian Moore, Daniel John Roddy, Rajani Srikumar, Erika Vlatsson, Adrienne Williams, for their tremendous support, kind words and encouragement. I take the responsibility for any mistakes, typos, omissions, commissions etc. in this first edition. i
  6. 6. What is your favorite quote? And why? When faced with difficult questions or challenging situations in life like ―Where to go?‖, ―What to do‖? ―Which path to take?‖, ―Whether to end it all?‖ and such; I must admit that I did not have the desired success in silent reflections. I always paused to introspect, yes, but ultimately took recourse to a wise-saying, a quote or an anecdote to pick-me up and help me stay on course. The questions eventually begin to fade and the path one chooses and the journey one embarks upon takes over and becomes life. There is a tremendous sense of relief and a surge of elation that an appropriate quote brought to my mental state while facing despair or doom, which cannot be expressed in words; no amount of gratitude will pay back in kind, expect heading resolutely in the direction, the wise men who gave those quotes have pointed out. Nothing short of an elixir. And no road-map works better. Having experienced it myself, I set out 6 months ago, and asked my fellow travellers on Linkedin©, ―What is your favorite quote? And Why?‖
  7. 7. What is your favorite quote? And why? The response was tremendous. It took time to build up, but then it did. And How! From across the globe, a virtual bouquet of experiences and expertise from varied set of individuals started flowing in, making the discussion a vibrant fountain-head of inspiration. Illuminating and interesting contributions and perspectives with tremendous depth have enriched lives of many who have spent but few moments to drink from it. I have ambitiously attempted, with an amateur‘s passion and in his fashion, to bring it all together in a firm belief that it will impact positively the lives of those who come across this treasure-trove. I trust you will lend a helping hand in sharing and spreading the wisdom contained in here to others whose lives you want to help take a better turn. If you want to use it in your training sessions, or use them as screen-savers or posters, give it to colleagues, superiors or sub-ordinates; please go ahead and do it. Let a few minds open up to new horizons outside their comfort zones and more hearts inspire to realise the potential within. Arun Vemuri Mumbai, April 2010
  8. 8. What is your favorite quote? And why? – Latin Proverb
  9. 9. What is your favorite quote? And why? "What the caterpillar calls the end of the world, the master 1. calls a butterfly" - Richard Bach It tells me that change is: - Inevitable, part of life - Painful and mostly leads to a situation where you may even lose your old identity but at the same time: - It is rewarding and gives you wings and - Opens the door for a beautiful world The choice is between hanging on to the past and ruing what's lost or bracing for the road ahead and profiting from it. And the decision is purely one's own and has to come from within! Arun Vemuri Life has taught me that indeed we are lucky most of the time when our prayers are not answered and we don‘t get what we pray for. Most of the time, it results in something even better and something which we just cant think of being so engulfed with our tensions and worries. Sanjay Kumar Ghoshal " If you miss a day, you will be always missing it! " 2. - Anonymous < i > Respect the value of Time. <ii > Time never comes back. < iii > Live in present - prepare for tomorrow taking lessons from yesterdays. As early you realize - as earlier you get groomed! Kumar Saurav "I cried because I had no shoes and then I saw the man with no 3. feet." - Persian Proverb Too many people whine about everything they don't have instead of being grateful for what they do have. What caused our present meltdown are people and companies wanting more and more and not being happy with the good they had, now no one has any good and we made quite as mess for ourselves to dig out of. Ellen Predham It always motivates me to remain grounded...Every time..!! Vidushi Gupta Page 1
  10. 10. What is your favorite quote? And why? "Most of the things worth doing in the world had been declared 4. impossible before they were done." - Louis D. Brandeis, 20th Century Supreme Court Justice I love this quote because it speaks to human nature to explore, discover, invent, and seek new challenges and unwillingness to accept the status quo. Tina Perrin "Every morning in the jungles of Africa, a LION wakes up and says," I have to run faster than the fastest GAZELLE. Every morning in the jungles of Africa, a GAZELLE wakes up and says 5. " I have to run faster than the fastest LION" cuz in the jungles of Africa, it doesn’t matter if you are a LION or a GAZELLE, if its RUN. - Teague Allston These are such powerful lions that it almost works each time a conduct a workshop! Interpretations and meanings can be drawn are re very subjective. Prasad Dixit "People, even more than things, have to be restored, renewed, 6. revived, reclaimed, and redeemed; never throw out anyone." - Audrey Hepburn I guess that quote resonates because it says a lot in a memorable way about how we can and should go the extra mile when dealing with people and seeing the greatest possible value in each of them both personally and professionally. I will now gently step off my digital soapbox . . . Thanks for reading. Bob Cullen Page 2

It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about 22. shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It's not just in some of us; it's in everyone. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.” - Marianne Williamson The message is clear - do not be common when you can be fantastically uncommon. 23. 23. What is your favorite quote? And why? Confucius literally "Master Kong was a Chinese thinker and social philosopher. He was born in 551 BCE in the Lu state. His teachings may be found in the Analects of Confucius, a collection of "brief aphoristic fragments". He was of the opinion that moderation was the only way to stay between life's extremes; each person in the world should maintain the respect of his or her position, such were his thoughts. For Confucius, family was very important and he believed that a man should always honour the relationship between master and servant, father and son, husband and wife, elder and younger siblings and two friends. Last but not the least, he urged people to honour the aged people. Confucianism concerns itself with the practical aspects of life, such as good manners, treating others kindly and enhancing family relations. Instead of being poetic about God or metaphysics, Confucius directed his teachings on moral and ethical grounds. Bothered about earthly matters, he rested his theory on two main ideas - being a true gentleman and having proper conduct. He stressed that a true gentleman is one who has five characteristics - integrity, righteousness, loyalty, altruism and goodness. As for proper conduct, the second most important foundation of Confucianism, a person should practice social decorum and rituals, as it is the quickest path to ethical growth. Confucius' thoughts have been developed into a system of philosophy known as Confucianism. Some of his famous Quotations:  Before you embark on a journey of revenge, dig two graves.  Forget injuries, never forget kindnesses.  I am not one who was born in the possession of knowledge; I am one who is fond of antiquity, and earnest in seeking it there.  Hold faithfulness and sincerity as first principles.  Wheresoever you go, go with all your heart.  By nature, men are nearly alike; by practice, they get to be wide apart. I find it remarkable that within such a diverse society, with so many varying perspectives, that we all get along as well as we do. Nicole Darlaston “Live for today, Learn from yesterday, hope for tomorrow...” 53. - Albert Einstein I've always liked this and it keeps me grounded, Keith Nadeau “What we have done for ourselves alone dies with us; what we 54. have done for others and the world remains and is immortal.” - Albert Pike I collect quotes and change my email quote monthly so this string of comments is especially interesting. 26. 26. What is your favorite quote? And why? "Because we don't know what is really important to us, everything seems important. Because everything seems important we have to do everything. Other people, unfortunately, see us as doing 59. everything so they expect us to do everything. I'm happy to report that everything I thought was important really wasn't and I'm super happy today! Rachel Merrifield "People in cardboard boxes should throw stones." 60. - Anonymous I like this quote for several reasons- mostly because it empowers the seemingly powerless. It was an obvious play on "People in glass houses shouldn't throw stones" but the message is greater- instead of telling people to keep quiet it urges them to take action and stand up for themselves. The greatest aspect of the quote for me is where I heard it, in the Financial District of Manhattan, near Wall St. I will say that personally I prefer non-violent means for change, but when all peaceful options are exhausted and the powerful minority refuses to correct the err of their own making the people will revolt. Jake Vogel "I don't know the key to success, but the key to failure is trying 61. to please everybody" - Bill Cosby I like this quote because, in HR we want to please the people we work with. The 63. optimist invents the airplane and the pessimist the parachute" - Gil Stern To me this speaks to the value of teamwork and the notion that even those with varying opinions and beliefs can greatly aid a successful effort! Ron Kubitz [LION] 9200+(16M+) Open Networker “To be learned and educated its important to know that it is not 64. about competing but learning.” - Myself Why? Often due to extreme competitiveness in education there are two flaws. 1) Competing in Education leads many to adopt unethical means of performing well and obtaining good marks leading to frustration of people who actually want to learn. 2) If education is all about grades then it is designed in a ways to get those grades which leads to displacement of people who do not get good grades and looses the will to learn and educate him self. Indraneel Dass “You are not determined by anything external to yourself.” 65. - Anonymous I like this quote simply because this is my life; shame on me if I don‘t enjoy it. Either do it or let it go!" 68. - Carolyn Hutchison I said this past summer while listening to a young cowboy randomly shares his intentions...he went on and on and then he hopped in his truck and drove to Florida for his next big adventure. My hope is he truly does follow through with his intentions. I've watched that scenario play again and again with people I've coached or recruited. I've made it habit to start asking people if they really do plan on doing it or just talking about it. Wonderful conversations have grown out of the stmt and question. I use it all the time now. And I use it on myself. It's made a world of difference. Carolyn Hutchison "Sometimes it’s best to look reality in the eye and deny it." 69. - Woody Allen I love this because people tend to be bound by what appears to be true (reality), and not what is possible. Frederique Thiriet-Smith This speaks to all of us that we need not be afraid to take chances, seek adventures and get out in the world and do - no matter who we are and what kind of work we do. The smallest of gestures can make a difference in someone's life. Marla Ripperton "We don't stop playing because we grow old; we grow old because 75. we stop playing." - George Bernard Shaw Playing is the recipe to stay young! It can not be hurried. Angela Ellis "At 211 degrees water is stagnant. At 212 is boils!" 84. - Anonymous This statement simply says that a little effort goes a long way. Meseret Kifle "You win with people". 97. - Woody Hayes I will never be able to back pay to all those who helped me get to where I am today, but I certainly can help others get to their future. 37. 37. What is your favorite quote? And why? William Shakespeare was baptized on 26 April 1564. He was an English poet and playwright, widely regarded as the greatest writer in the English language and the world's pre-eminent dramatist. He is often called England's national poet and the "Bard of Avon". His surviving works, including some collaborations, consist of 38 plays, 154 sonnets, two long narrative poems, and several other poems. Between 1585 and 1592, he began a successful career in London as an actor, writer, and part owner of a playing company called the Lord Chamberlain's Men, later known as the King's Men. Shakespeare produced most of his known work between 1589 and 1613. His early plays were mainly comedies and histories, genres he raised to the peak of sophistication and artistry by the end of the sixteenth century. He then wrote mainly tragedies until about 1608, including Hamlet, King Lear, and Macbeth, considered some of the finest works in the English language. In his last phase, he wrote tragicomedies, also known as romances, and collaborated with other playwrights. Shakespeare was a respected poet and playwright in his own day, but his reputation did not rise to its present heights until the nineteenth century. His plays remain highly popular today and are constantly studied, performed and reinterpreted in diverse cultural and political contexts throughout the world. Some of his famous Quotations:  A wretched soul, bruised with adversity, We bid be quiet when we hear it cry; But were we burdened with like weight of pain, As much or more we should ourselves complain.  Action is eloquence.  Assume a virtue, if you have it not.  Be great in act, as you have been in thought.  Conversation should be pleasant without scurrility, witty without affectation, free without indecency, learned without conceitedness, novel without falsehood.  I feel within me a peace above all earthly dignities, a still and quiet conscience. He was the practitioner of ahimsa and was a pioneer of Satyagraha, a philosophy firmly founded upon ahimsa or total nonviolence—which led India to independence and inspired movements for civil rights and freedom across the world. he swore to speak the truth and advocated that others do the same. Gandhi first employed non-violence and truth as his weapon. He lived modestly in a self-sufficient residential community and wore the traditional Indian dhoti and shawl, woven with yarn he had hand spun himself. He ate simple vegetarian food, eventually adopting a fruitarian diet, and also undertook long fasts as a means of both self-purification and social protest. He is commonly known around the world as Mahatma Gandhi or "Great Soul", an honorific first applied to him by Rabindra Nath Tagore. Paying tribute to Mahatma Gandhi on his death, famous scientist Albert Einstein said, "Generations to come will scarce believe that such a man as this walked the earth in flesh and blood". 60. 60. What is your favorite quote? And why? "Life can only be understood backwards, but it must be lived 183. forwards" - Soren Kierkegaard This quote is attributed to various people, and there are various interpretations. I‘ll give the one that I find best with the example of the Father of India, Mahatma Gandhi. When Mahatma Gandhi stole some gold as a child, and later apologized to his father, he would not have understood the significance or the value of the incident. When Mahatma Gandhi was thrown out of a train in South Africa, he would not have understood the significance or the worth of the incident. When Mahatma Gandhi first led his uprising in Champaran, he would not have understood the significance or the importance of the incident. But when we look back at his life, we realize that the incident as a child gave him his first taste of truth, which got refined in South Africa, and which passed the acid test in Champaran, which finally culminated in the independence of India. We realize and understand the significance of each incident only when we look backwards. But in spite of this, he could only live his life forward. I find this quote most inspiring when I am in a real soup and I am wondering ‗Why only me?‘ It tells me that pain and suffering sometimes do have a reason, and a problem, a setback or the feeling of losing something can have its own significance and importance in the grand scheme of things. David Brunner "Adversity is like a knife. It can cut you, or serve you, depending 192. upon whether you grasp it by the blade, or the handle" - Anonymous Why this quote? Simply put, too many people fail to see the opportunities in changes, or unexpected circumstances. 65. 65. What is your favorite quote? And why? Henry Ford (July 30, 1863 – April 7, 1947) was the American founder of the Ford Motor Company. He began life as a farmer's son and quickly became rich and famous and soon became an icon of a self-made man. Although an industrialist, Ford remembered and cared the common man. He designed the Model T for the masses and installed a mechanized assembly line to make production cheaper and faster. The motorized assembly line significantly cut the time, and thus cost, of manufacturing each car. Ford passed on this savings to the customer. He also instituted the $5 per day pay rate for his workers, which was nearly double what workers were paid in other auto factories. Ford believed that by raising the workers' pay, the workers would be happier (and faster) on the job, their wives could stay home to care for the family, and the workers were more likely to stay with the Ford Motor Company (leading to less down-time for training new workers). Ford also created a sociological department in the factory that would examine workers' lives and try to make it better. Since he believed he knew what was best for his workers, Henry was very much against unions. His introduction of the Model T automobile revolutionized transportation and American industry. He was a prolific inventor and was awarded 161 U.S. patents. Some of his famous Quotations:  A bore is a person who opens his mouth and puts his feats in it.  A business that makes nothing but money is a poor business.  Business is never so healthy as when, like a chicken, it must do a certain amount of scratching around for what it gets.  Don't find fault, find a remedy.  Even a mistake may turn out to be the one thing necessary to a worthwhile achievement.  Exercise is bunk. If you are healthy, you don't need it: if you are sick you should not take it. Page 57
