Established in 1972, the American Osteopathic
Board of General Practitioners changed its name to
the American Osteopathic Board of Family
Physicians (AOBFP) in 1993. Along with the 17
other partnering boards of the American
Osteopathic Association (AOA), the AOBFP holds
authority to administer tests in medical specialties
recognized by the AOA.

In addition to passing rigorous examinations, family
physicians pursuing Board Certification must also
finish an AOA-sanctioned 24-month family practice
residency as well as a 12-month AOA-sanctioned
internship. Professionals certified after February of
1997 complete recertification after eight years.

Complementing the AOBFP's primary certification
program, the organization offers certification of
added qualifications in family, undersea, hyperbaric,
hospice, and sleep medicine.
