10 Awesome Success Tips for Life or Business
This year, 2019, marks my 12th year in coaching. Yes, it was 2007 when I first started
this journey and life coaching was a ‘new thing’. Predictably, much has happened since
then; the industry has evolved, I have evolved, and I’ve learned a lot along the way. I
became a coach to help people live better lives - to experience more happiness, ease
and personal joy, and yes, more success. I have been fortunate enough to work with
hundreds of clients at this time, and it’s given me a pretty good idea of what works and
what doesn’t. Many of my clients have already been highly successful in the areas of
career and finance, owning companies worth tens of millions of dollars. And it’s true,
success leaves clues. There are certain habits and behaviors that I witnessed over and
over again that let to success in whatever area they were applied.
Here are my 10 best tips you can use to create success in any area of your life.
1. Do things even when you don’t feel like doing it
This is the single biggest determinate I found to success again and again - successful
people do things that are hard, boring and yes, especially when they don’t feel like it! I
find this can be a tough one in spiritual circles if you are committed to aligned actions
and flow, and it is one I have struggled with personally, but it does produce results.
Successful people may not always like doing some of the things they have to do, but
they do them anyway, knowing that in the longer run it’s the difference between getting
what you say you want or not.
2. Make decisions and take action as quickly and efficiently as possible.
Action educates you. Make a decision and make it right! Sitting on the fence is an
energy drain and a motivation killer. Whatever the issue is, it sits there in your
subconscious nagging you until you do something about it. If you’re struggling with a
decision on a particular issue, get the help, support or information you need and then
set a time limit and begin to take action. Remember, you only have to know the ONE
next step.
3. Do one thing at a time.
In my experience, multi-tasking is a myth. It leads to overwhelm, inefficiency, mistakes
and confusion. If something is worth doing, do it right! Focusing 100% on one task at a
time will get it done quicker and better. And if you can’t find the time to do something
right, when are you going to find the time to fix it?! :)
4. Do the most productive things first.
There are many things we can do on any given day that are somewhat productive, but
maybe not that important. Successful people focus on what is key and crucial, the next
best step, and do that first. This is where it get’s tricky; the things that are really going to
make a change or move you forward may not be the most fun to do. But procrastination
is an energy drain and the momentum you’ll get from tackling the pivotal items first will
give you an energy boost to take the next big step.
5. Clean up loose ends.
This goes hand in hand with the tip above. One of my most successful clients, a man
who owned a gold mine, said to me one day “I abhor loose ends.” And I am inclined to
agree. Again, loose ends are energy drains; they constantly nag at you sapping away
precious mental energy and focus. They create a sense of continual urgency for
something that might otherwise have minimal significance. I keep a post it note stuck to
my computer that says “I do complete work”. I need the reminder to stay focused and to
not get distracted by the next shiny object. And if this isn’t enough to convince you Zelda
Fitzgerald famously said “Loose ends are the strings by which men hang themselves.”
6. Find and fiercely defend and follow your purpose in life.
I know, this is easier said than done, but it is crucial to living a full, happy and successful
life - whatever that means to you. Whether your purpose is to run a store, raise a family,
make cupcakes or travel the globe, it is YOUR purpose and YOU get to decide. Don’t
confuse what you do for a living with your purpose - maybe they are entwined and
maybe not. And keeping a roof overhead and feeding the family is crucially important.
But successful people are 100% clear on their purpose. They are internally driven rather
than externally driven. They do what they have a burning desire to do without the
emotional weight of worrying about conforming to what others think they should do.
Professional athletes, the Bill Gates, Steve Jobs and OprahWinfreys of the world are so
successful, so radiant and so strong because they are crystal clear on their purpose.
This is why they can keep on going and be motivated while others may tire or quit. Align
with your purpose and allow it to inspire your life and your actions instead of pushing
and forcing.
7. Value your time highly and plan it out well.
So many people, particularly new entrepreneurs don’t value their time. There is an
underlying feeling of ‘Oh… I’m not making that much money right now so my time isn’t
worth that much.’ But time is our most precious commodity because it is finite and
completely irreplaceable. We all get 168 hours a week - that’s it! No one gets or can
make a single minute more. Everything you do, you are trading part of your life for, so
make it count. Your time IS your life, use it accordingly.
8. Don’t look back and don’t worry about what anyone else is doing.
You can’t run a race looking over your shoulder, and you certainly can’t win one that
way. Successful people know this and stick to it vehemently. You can’t do anything
about what someone else is doing, and longing for or regretting the past keeps you
stuck and off-balance. Keep your focus on what you are doing and where you want to
go. The present moment is always your greatest source of power.
9. Get Help
This is a big one and can save months or even years on your journey. Help comes in
many different forms. This could mean finding a mentor, hiring a coach, collaborating
with a support group, or seeking out people to handle every day tasks. Highly
successful people will often times credit their success in part to the support they garner
from those around them. A mentor or a group of mentors and peers can really help
guide you to get to where you want to be more quickly and easily than going it alone.
Many others have gone down the road that you want to travel or are heading in the
same direction; why not learn from their knowledge and experiences? Mentors or
coaches serve as a guide with whom you plan your next steps. Peers and support
groups are your companions that help you during the actual execution of your plan. This
may be in the form of a mastermind group or accountability partner where you keep
each other on track with your goals and help each other deal with challenges that come
up along the way.
The other type of support that’s invaluable is actual hands on help. This could be in the
form of a housekeeper, website help, a virtual assistant etc. The reality is that we are all
only given 24 hours each day to live full, happy and productive lives. It is simply more
effective to do what you do best and to outsource tasks that you’re just not good at to
people who excel at them.
10. Be Resilient
Things rarely work out the way you planned and there will always be distractions,
hurdles and stumbling blocks that you have to deal with along the way. The first one or
two might be easy or even exhilarating to tackle and overcome. But as you progress
and the obstacles get bigger, it’s understandable to feel overwhelmed and want to throw
in the towel. Successful people know that the key is to persist; to develop the internal
muscles and courage to keep moving forward when everyone around you is telling you
it is ok to give up and you really feel like quitting. This doesn’t mean stubbornly holding
on to your original plan but rather continuing to grow and evolve that vision and how you
respond to challenges as you pursue your goal.
Pick just one or two of the success habits above to focus on. Really master that area
and then move on to the next.Successful people might be well-educated or not, they
may have had socially well connected upbringings or just be naturally energetic, driven
and outgoing, but many of the factors that make some people more successful at
almost anything they do in life are very much under their control. And there’s always a
lot can be improved in anyone’s life by learning from the people that have gone before
us.
