  5. 5. Titanic 1912 After 1912 all ships at sea were required to have radio equipment installed. Ship Radio Operators were needed so amateur radio operators were asked to help teach classes. In October 1957 the US started a “space race” with the Russians. NASA was formed, many amateur radio operators were hired by radio companies to develop new equipment. Sputnik 1957 Texting is a form of digital communications originally developed by amateur radio operators back in the 1940’s. Texting 2012
