Company Profile Porwal Beedi Manufacturing Industry (PBMI) is a company in nagpur India which manufactures around 1 crore beedi’s a day. They are into this business for more than 20 years. PBMI hires hundreds of workers everyday to do inspection, sorting and cutting of beedi (tendu) leaves. Beedi – It is an indigenous cigarette very popular throughout India. It is made by rolling tobacco in tendu leaves ( popularly known as beedi leaves) and tied with a cotton thread Application Details. PBMI hires everyday hundreds of contract labours to do inspection, sorting and cutting of Beedi leaves. They were looking to improve the quality of the beedi’s along with maximizing the usage of the raw materials ( beedi leaves). They went with NI’s vision system for inspection and sorting and to do analysis for optimizing the cutting area on the leaf. This information is then passed on to their leaf cutting machineries. To do this the hardware used was 1) NI PCI 1407 2) NI PCI 6229 Software’s used were 1) NI LabVIEW 2) NI Vision Development module. The inspections and Analysis they were doing are as follows; 1) Finding black spots on the leaf. 2) Discoloration of the leaf. 3) Thickness of the vein. 4) optimizing the fit of the cutting area on the leaf so that maximum number of parts can be cut from the same leaf. After the analysis relevant information is passed to the leaf cutting machinery which will cut the leaf according to the profile decided by the vision inspection system. All the data would also be stored in a central data base which can be used in future for further analysis. Currently they are able to achieve an inspection rate of 60 leaves a minute due to the limitation in the mechanical parts of their cutting machinery which can be improvised further to accommodate 120 leaves per minute as the vision system can do the inspection at this rate. Advantages of the system to PBMI. 1) Cut down on the number of contract employees hired for the job. 2) Better quality control of the final product 3) More information for the feedbacks to be provided to their leaf vendors. 4) Reliable data on the number of leaf cut everyday and on the wastage of raw materials. PBMI is happy with the system and is planning to buy more number of vision system for other inspection lines.

    1. Leaf Inspection System Inspection of Beedi Leaves are done and the feedback is given online to the leaf cutting system where the leaves are trimmed appropriately. Features of the Inspection system: 1) Very fast online inspection and rejection possible. 2) It can find and report 4 different faults in the leaf at 0.5 sec/leaf 3) After Analysis the feedbacks can be provided online to the leaf cutting Machinery. 4) Special Algorithms in NI Vision Development module is used to optimize the cutting area in a leaf. 5) Relevant data from the inspection like no. of faulty leaves in a day, kind of faults found, no. of leaves cut etc can be stored to a central database. Hardware used: a) NI PCI 1407 b) NI PCI 6229 Software used: a) NI LabVIEW. b) NI Vision Development Module.
