    Application Presentation - NI India - Pradeep Nair - Power - Transformers Monitoring - Q4 2005 - Presentation Transcript

    1. On-line Transformer Monitoring System
    2. Advantages of On-line Monitoring System (OMS)
      • Guide Predictive maintenance against warranty cost
      • Record all relevant values in a local database.
      • Detection of incipient faults at an early stage
      • Keep a track of thermal ageing.
      • Advanced information is available to understand various trends and improve the management of possible overload conditions and critical hotspot temperatures
      • Allows more efficient, profitable and controlled transformer exploitation.
    3. Hardware Architecture of OMS
      • Basically consists of 5 monitoring modules
      • Base Body Module.
      • Cooling system Module.
      • OLTC Module.
      • Bushings Module.
      • In-tank Module.
      • Base Body Module: Used to monitor vibration, strain and temperature of the body of the transformer at various location.
      • Sensors used are: Strain Guage, PT 100, Accelerometers.
Cooling System Module: Cooling system is responsible for transferring the heat generated inside the active parts of the transformer to the ambient cooling medium. Sensors used are: PT 100, optical encoders.
      • In-tank Monitoring Module: This module is used do three different kinds of monitoring.
          • Dissolved Gas Analysis
          • Moisture in Oil Analysis
          • Oil Temperature Analysis
    4. Cooling System Module
      • Cooling system is responsible for transferring the heat generated inside the active parts of the transformer to the ambient cooling medium.
      • The following parameters are required to be monitored
      • Temperature -- PT 100
      • Speed of the fan -- encoders and digital channels.
    5. OLTC Module
      • Sensors used in OLTC Module are :
      • Accelerometers
      • Power Transducers
      • PT 100.
Recordings of the tap changer position and the operating current help to determine the number of tap switching operations and the total switched current. OLTC failures are often dominated by mechanical faults in nature. Mechanical and control problems can be detected by measurement of Physical parameters and the power consumption of the OLTC drive
    6. Bushings Module
      • Sensors used in this module are:
      • Capacitance/inductance transducers
      • High voltage transducers (0-50A)
      • Current Transducers
      • Oil Pressure Transducers
      • Moisture in Oil Sensors
Bushing failures occurs predominantly because of changing dielectric properties caused due to aging, oil leaks, design or manufacturing flaws, or the presence of moisture .
    7. Tan δ monitoring
      • Tan δ , also called as loss angle or Dissipation Factor testing, is a diagnostic method of testing the quality of insulation.
      • In case of perfect insulation , the voltage and current are phase shifted by 90 degrees .
      • If there are impurities in the insulation, the resistance of the insulation decreases, resulting in an increase in resistive current .
      • The current and voltage will no longer be shifted 90 degrees.
      • The extent to which the phase shift is less than 90 degrees is indicative of the level of insulation contamination .
    8. In-tank Monitoring Module
      • Dissolved Gas Analysis (DGA).
      • Moisture in Oil Transducers.
      • PT100 for monitoring temperature of oil at various location.
    9. Faults identified by DGA
    10. Distribution and Visualization of Monitoring Data. Can also be done over GPRS or GSM network.
