      • He is a fourth-generation Singaporean. His great-grandfather had left Dapu County, Guangdong Province for Singapore at the age of 16. Lee's grandfather, Hoon Leong, went to an English school and began a career as a pharmacist, a trade dominated by the Hakkas. Lee's father, Chin Koon, first worked as a storekeeper at Shell and later at a jewellery shop.
      • He was the first-born and he was a boy, important to the Chinese for perpetuating the family name. He gave his grandfather such great pride that the old man declared that the child should be educated to become the equal of any Englishman, that is, the model of perfection. The name chosen for him , Kuan Yew, means "the light that shines far and wide“

      • Yusof bin Ishak ( August 12 , 1910 - November 23 , 1970 ) was an eminent Singaporean politician .
      • Born in Perak , he first served as Yang di-Pertuan Negara ( head of state ) between 1959 and 1965 , remaining in office during the time that Singapore was part of Malaysia, between 1963 to 1965 .

David Saul Marshall David Saul Marshall (born March 12 , 1908 , Singapore – died December 12 , 1995 , Singapore ) was the leader of the Singapore Labour Front who became the first Chief Minister of Singapore in 1955 . He would later become the most successful criminal lawyer in Singapore, with a reputation that "Marshall never loses". Known for his sharp eloquence and imposing stances, he claimed that he had 99 acquittals out of 100 cases he defended for murder.
