1. Vienna
Finally, after more than two months since I returned from my Europe trip, I
completed this album on Vienna. (Photo shows the fountain fronting Schonbrunn
Palace, a Viennese must-see landmark)
I spent ten days in Vienna from August 14 until 27, when I arrived at Hilton
Danube, and experienced the "Old Vienna" practically on foot (although I did
ride all available transport except taxi - from the shuttle Mercedes Benz service
of Hilton Danube to the u-bahn, the strassenbahn, the tram, and the cat airport

My photos begin with the famous region south of Vienna along the Danube up North called "Wienerwald" where the
Abbey of the Holy Cross is located. This Cistercian monastery was established by Leopold III the Saint in 1133. Of
particular interest is the cloister and the chapel where the relic of the Holy Cross is enshrined. After this tour, we
visited Mayerling, the hunting lodge where Crown Prince Rudolf committed suicide with his lover. Then off we went to
Baden, a health resort, located within a beautiful landscape of hills, woods and vineyards. The 15 hot springs had
been used by the Romans and visited by famous people such as Mozart and Beethoven. From 1813 until 1834 Baden
was used as summer residence by the royal court.
I spent a good deal of time at Karlsplatz because the ICA-SUV seminar was held at the University of Vienna campus
(http://asia.pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/emeritamanansala/detail?.dir=dbf9&.dnm=2da8.jpg) in Karlplatz.
Which explains the Karlskirche (one of the finest Baroque
example), Brahms monument in the Karlplatz garden (photo
below right), and the original train station. Quite near is the
Opera House and Stadtpark where I stood beside the
Strauss monument (below Brahms). Two stops at the U-
bahn is St. Stephen's Cathedral where I spent many
afternoons because it is in the center of Vienna, (although I
managed to discover the oldest part of the town around
St. Ruprechts Church (the oldest in Vienna ca. 11th c).
From Pfeilgasse (a budget hotel) where I stayed for one
week after I moved out of Hilton Danube, it's only one
stop by strassenbahn to the Museumstrasse. So I pass by
everyday the Volkstheatre, the Museumplatz where the
famous Maria Theresa monument and the twin museum
buildings of fine arts and natural history stand. A litle detour and I wind up at the
Parliament and the Rathaus (the townhall) and
end up at the Heldenplatz, the Hofburg Imperial
Palace (which I toured for more than 2 hours to
see the Imperial apartments and the Silverware
collection), the National Bibliotek, and the
nearby Burggarten (lovely park) where I posed
before Mozart's memorial. Though not in the
picture is a memorial to Goethe along the

Almost everyday I made it a point to visit a church and light two candles for my Nanay
and Daddy. In this album, I have pictures of some of them. I also had dinner in an
Italian sidestreet cafe with Nap Cuenco (a psychiatrist from Virginia), Alex and Rona
Rosario (accountants from New York), and Ruthie (a nurse from Virginia). I ordered a
big plateful of bridal pasta and seafood, a cup of capuccino and gellato for dessert.
An early am trip to Schonbrunn was a must because of its historical significance and
magnificence. But taking pictures/videos was strictly forbidden so I have only pictures
taken outside. Same with the Belvedere Palace (above beside Mozart’s statue), which I
visited on another occasion by myself because of distance from the city. The trip to Salzburg on my own is in another

of Daddy who spent a good deal of time there, and took a good shot of
Mozart's gebursthaus, the Mirabella
gardens, the cathedral, and St. Peter
monastery. I lighted two candles at
St. Blasius Church, the oldest stone
church, and the quietest part of the
city. I also made a photo stop at St.
Wolfgang lake to capture the scene
of The Sound of Music. My last two
days were spent at The Austria
Center where the ICA (International
Council on Archives) Congress was
held.
