Overcoming The Fear Of Success
1. Overcoming The Fear Of Success
The Subtle Fear: Fear Of Success
Most of us have heard about the fear failure but there's something that's even more elusive than that. A major factor that is
overlooked in many of our lives when we are trying to achieve our goals is the "fear of success".
The fear of failure often creates a situation where it's difficult for us to make a decision or take action because of fear of
rejection or a disastrous outcome. There's plenty of tools and advice out there to overcome this fear of failure, so I don't
want to talk about that at all in this post. The fear that I want to talk about is much more subtle and more difficult to spot
than the fear failure and that is the fear of success.
The first step in overcoming your fear of success is to recognize its presence in your own life. Here are some possible
indications that you have a fear of success:
1. You study and try to apply self-improvement techniques in your life but you don't see any improvement or things even
get worse.
2. You find yourself always settling for less than what you think you deserve or can achieve if given the chance.
3. You start a new project with excitement and energy but then you stop before the project is completed. You explain away
the uncompleted project by saying that you've moved on or you're not interested in it anymore.
4. Even when things appear to be going well you're always waiting in the back of your mind for things to go wrong.
5. Often when you are close to achieving success you engage in self-sabotaging or self-destructive behavior that prevents
you from reaching success. Then, you blame your failure on bad luck or someone else's actions.
There are plenty of other subtle ways that we think and act in our lives that are strong indications that we have a fear of
success.
Some other symptoms might include:
procrastination
analysis paralysis
waiting for the perfect timing
being a perfectionist
focusing on only the problems
How To Overcome The Fear Of Success
Here are a few things you can do to overcome your fear of success:
1. Ready, Shoot, Aim. Approach your projects and your goals with action in mind first and foremost. Don't over think it.
Look at what you want and quickly come up with a plan to take massive action. The greatest success comes to those who
have learned to take massive action and to take the challenges as they come.
2. Speed of implementation is the key. This is a foundational principle of success. Moving toward success requires
momentum and energy. To achieve that success there needs to be a constant flow of energy and momentum or else it will
take more time, energy and focus to achieve that success if you lose that momentum.
3. It's okay to not have all the answers. This concept goes hand-in-hand with the ready, shoot, aim approach. You have to
learn to be flexible, to "roll with the punches" and be okay with not having all the answers.
2. 4. Obstacles are roadsigns to success. Changing your perspective about an obstacle that is preventing you from reaching
success can make all the difference. Obstacles should provoke the right questions. Those questions answered correctly can
guide you to success.
5. There is no such thing as failure, only outcomes. What I mean by this statement is that failure is nothing more than an
outcome that can provide us with valuable information on course recorrection. It's okay to get a little messy, to get a little
bloody and to lose our bearings once in a while. These failures, oddly enough, can be sources of strength in the future as
we reflect back on how we overcame that obstacle.
Nothing is worth achieving unless there is some struggle involved. Without that struggle, success loses it's power to propel
our lives forward to greater heights.
As you take massive action and start believing that you deserve success you'll find that even when you feel that fear of
success you will find that you have the strength, the energy and momentum to achieve success in your life.
