  • The Simple Past Tense
    • 1. It is used for actions completed in the past at a definite time :
    • For a past action when the time is given
    • Example: I met him yesterday
    • 2. It is used for an action for a period of time in the past.
    • Ex: I worked in that bank for four years.
  • SOME TIME WORDS. . .
    • Yesterday
    • Last Night
    • Last Week
    • Last Year
    • A month ago. . .
    • Two years ago. . .
    • in 1985
  • FORMING THE SIMPLE PAST
    • For regular verbs, add– ed to the simple form of the verb.
    • Example: I visit ed New Orleans last year.
    • For irregular verbs,change the verb.
    • Example: I went to the movies yesterday
    • go ------- went
    • For negatives, use did not or didn’t with the simple form of the verb.
    • Example: She didn’t come to class last week .
    • For questions, use did or didn’t before the simple (verb 1) form of the verb.
    • Example: Did / Didn’t he call you last night?
  • THE SIMPLE PAST TENSE
    • Affirmative (Positive Sentences):
    • I talk ed to her last night.
    • She visit ed her uncle in 1990.
    • Ahmet saw a dog on the street.
    • Positive and Negative Questions:
    • Did Emrah visit you last summer ?
    • Didn’t you listen to me?
    • When did you talk to her?
    • Negative Sentences:
    • I didn’t talk to her yesterday .

  • Use simple Past
    • George Washington ________________ (be) the first president of the
