SupremeCourt used power of Judicial Review in caseof Marbury vs. Madison.President’s House, Washington, DC•George Washington: 1stPresident of the United States of America under the Constitution.-As the 1stPresident of the US, Washington set many precedents.-He organized and implemented the new government under the US Constitution.-Oversaw the creation of the US Supreme Court. He appointed the 1stChief Justice: John Jay.-Stabilized the economy.-Put down the Whiskey Rebellion.-Created Presidential Cabinet to advise.•During the 1790’s, 2 politicalparties emerge in the US.
    • •Thomas Jefferson: 3rdPresident-Purchased the LouisianaTerritory From France. Thisdoubled the size of the US. SentLewis and Clark to explore theterritory.•The Louisiana Territory wasadded in 1803. This was thelargest addition of land to theUS. President Jefferson sentLewis and Clark to explore andmap this land.•James Madison: 4thPresident-The War of 1812 is fought during this time.-US vs. Great Britain: Neither side wins.-GB invades and burns Capital building and President’s house.-Francis Scott Key writes Star Spangled Banner.British had set fire to the Capitol building•Andrew Jackson defeats the British at the Battleof New Orleans and becomes a national hero.
    • •James Monroe: 5thPresident-Monroe Doctrine: Principle that stated1. Europe stay out of America’s2. US oppose any colonization by Europe3. US would stay out of Europe•In 1818 Congressdecided to keep thenumber of stripes in theflag at 13 and just addstars for each new state.•John Quincy Adams: 6thPresident-Erie Canal built during this time.-Makes transportation faster, safer,and cheaper.•The Erie Canal connected the Great Lakesto the Hudson River. (Buffalo to Albany)Boats were pulled along the canal by horsesor mules.
    • •Andrew Jackson: 7thPresident-The People’s President: Aspresident, Jackson allowedordinary Americans tobecome more involved in thegovernment.•Indian Removal Act: 1830-Congress passed this law which allowed Pres. Jackson to give land toIndians in the west in exchange for their lands in the east.•Trail of Tears: In1830, 16,000Cherokee Indianswere forced off theirland and forced tomarch over 1,000 toa reservation inOklahoma. On thetrip, over 4,000Indians died.
