This talk will provide an introduction to the basics of using CartoCSS and TileMill to create both static and online maps hosted via MapBox or a service capable of supporting MBTiles. The emphasis will be on how to best ‘get started’ and offer a perspective on the advantages/challenges of using web-based tile services for sharing GIS data.

  • At the core TileMill is a Node.js web application leveraging Backbone.js on both the client and server and Mapnik for rendering geo data. It can be effortlessly deployed on a headless server and used over http, but it also runs natively as a single-windowed app on Mac, Linux, and Windows without the user ever knowing http used for IPC under the hood.
