CORONARY HEARTDISEASE Insufficient blood supply to the heart muscle due to an obstruction of one or more coronary arteries. • All types of CV disease have been the number one killer of Americans since the 19th century. This disease kills more people annually than the next 6 causes of death combined.
  4. 4. ARTERIOSCLEROSISThickening,hardening, andloss of elasticity ofthe walls of thearteries. Most oftendue toartherosclerosis.
  5. 5. ATHEROSCLEROSIS • The most common form of arteriosclerosis. Caused by the formation of yellowish plaques of cholesterol of the inner walls of arteries.
  6. 6. DIAGNOSTICPROCEDURE Serum lipoprotein level: Blood test to measure the amount of cholesterol and triglycerides in the blood. An indicator of atherosclerosis risk.
  7. 7. SURGICALPROCEDURES Endarterectomy: Removal of the diseased or damaged inner lining of an artery. Usually performed to remove atherosclerotic plaques.
  8. 8. SURGICALPROCEDURES CON’T Intracoronary Artery Stent: Placing of a stent within a coronary artery to treat coronary ischemia due to atherosclerosis.
