  • Many people have told me they found my DIYLMS presentation 'informative' and in case you agree you might like to know where the information comes from. Whenever I can I listen to podcasts while waiting in line, waiting for takeoff, out jogging, or on my way to and from work. I would attribute this one habit to my ability to keep abreast of the field as it enables me to constantly eavesdrop on conversations that colleagues are having about what inspires and motivates them and their students. There's an incredible amount of content out there, and like berries on a bush, the key is not to worry about the tidbits you can't reach, but to benefit as often as possible from the morsels you manage to savor.

    While in Marakkech giving this presentation I managed to break away for a jog and happened at that time to be listening to the EdTech Crew. They are one of my most consistent sources of information on instructional technology, and even multipliers of such information, as with this list of podcasts from their Podcast Special shownotes: http://www.edtechcrew.net/podcast/ed-tech-crew-179-ios-podcast-special

    On reflection, my ten paradigm shifts have been gleaned in large part from knowledge that came into my brain through my ears and became second nature, part of the ambient mantra, while listening to podcasts of presentations by Stephen Downes, conferences and MOOCs organized by George Siemens and others, K12-Online conference recordings and other audio nuggets provided by Wesley Fryer, Peggy George, Kim Cofino, Jeff Utecht, as well as from webcasting nomads Jeff Lebow and Dave Cormier and the whole panoply of Worldbridges and EdTech Talk podcasters, the list goes on and on.

    I'm deeply indebted to my colleagues who have shared with me knowledge that I have percolated and in turn shared freely with all those who stop however briefly on this presentation. In a SMALL world (of social media assisted language learning) the greatest affordance is our ability to interact with and learn from the most respected experts and one another at any time and as often as we like.
