  • What is social media A generic term for online services, societies and activities that allows users to interact and share information. Also refered to as sites for user-generated content.
  • Why should you care?  Communicate  Participate  Build trust But social media is  Influence not pixie dust – it  Learn doesn’t magically transform a boring  Inspire message  Engage
  • Internet is the conversation – be a part of it!
  • Some platforms and their uses  Facebook  Connect and interact with members and supporters, organize events and activities, update with relevant information – listen to comments and suggestions  Twitter  Short messages for sharing information and getting feedback instantly  YouTube  Sharing videos and comments  Flickr  Sharing pictures – making official pic’s available for media  Blog  A simple publishing platform for text, pictures, videos maintained by an individual or an organisation

  • Tweeter or twat?  Keep it personal, but not private  Listen before you speak  Follow & be followed  Be generous – share links & retweet  Be helpful – karma comes back to you  Make mistakes – and learn from it  Don’t spam

  • Making a great blog  What is great anyway?  Number of readers?  Influence?  Media attention?  It’s your blog – you decide!
  • Getting started  Choose a platform ,, etc  Listen & learn  Read and be inspired by experienced bloggers  Engage in the community  Comment others blog, create a relevant bloggroll, link actively to sources and other bloggers when you write  Promote  Through Twitter, Facebook, e-mail signature, profiles on other sites
  • 5 tips for bloggers  Have something to say, say it  Create value – original content  Be authentic – personal, not private  Engage in the community, be responsive  Have patience – it takes time to build an audience
