  2. 2. DVD & VIDEOS • DVD is the most popular media for archiving and exchanging movies and videos • The capacity of the SVCD is to low • Blue Ray is coming but not fully established in mass market Find out about the tools and techniques involved in Ripping, Editing, Authoring and Burning © waveCommerce UG 2010Tuesday, September 28, 2010
  3. 3. COPYING DVDS Use Disk Utility for non protected DVDs: • Insert DVD • Close DVD player again • DVD symbol should be on Desktop • Select the DVD in the left panel of Disk Utility • Click “New Image” • In the “Save As” Box choose “DVD/CD master” and “no encryption” • The new master image will appear in Disk Utility • Eject the original DVD, click on the new image, then click on burn in the top panel • In the “Burn” box choose the speed (choose a little slower than max.) and select “Verify Burned Data” • Click Burn - DONE! 4. 4. RIPPING A PROTECTED DVD • In combination with the VLC Player Fairmount can support decryption, Fairmount alone does not work. Be aware of quality issues and handling • Some vendors like wondershare, leawo etc. have language versions of their DVD Rippers, that can decrypt copy protection. The Wondershare DVD Ripper pavtube iMedia Converter for MAC Leawo DVD Ripper rips DVD and BlueRay - protected or not. !! Pavtube iMedia !! 5. 5. EDIT, CROP, MERGE VIDEO FILES To prepare a video for presentation, burning or sharing, some editing is very important. However an advanced Video Editing Software is usually unnecessary, as the important functions are included in your common mid-priced Video Converter. • With adjustment of saturation, brightness and contrast overall quality can be improved and differences between videos can be evened out. • With a cropping tool, black frames can be removed or the focus of home-made movies can be improved. • With cutting tools, parts of the video can be cut off and fragments merged to one video file. 6. 6. DVD AUTHORING - 1. Whether you are making a “Mix-DVD” of your favorite movie scenes or create a DVD of the last family event you need to make it playable in a DVD player. • DVD Creation Software helps you creating a combined MPEG2 multiplex video-stream out the data you provide (the VIDEO_TS”-File on the DVD) • To make it viewable on a DVD player a special UDF file format is needed • MPEG video files have to be converted before they can be burned to DVD. Common UDF Formats: Blue-ray and DVD(AVCHD) use UDF 2.5 or UDF 2.6 DVD Videos are in UDF 1.02 with an ISO 9660 and an UDF 1.02 File System Philips DVD+VR uses UDF 1.02 with ISO 9660 Menu , Subtitles, Watermarks ... © waveCommerce UG 2010Tuesday, September 28, 2010
  7. 7. DVD AUTHORING - 2. • With common DVD Creation Software you can add important features to your DVD. •A Menu can be added to allow selecting a specific scene or movie to play • A Watermark can protect your copyright or add a personal touch • Many more options are available depending on the software used. And now, what do I need to get started? © waveCommerce UG 2010Tuesday, September 28, 2010
  8. 8. SUMMARY 1. If you just want to download Videos and convert them to play on your MAC and/or mobile device you will be fine with a simple video converter. You are less flexible when you get one with a limited set of input and output formats. 2. If you also want to be able to occasionally put your DVD (or Blue Ray) Movies on your hard drive, you also need a DVD Ripper or a combined product (often Video Converter Plus) 3. If you want to create a DVD with a functioning menu and/or other features known from professional DVDs, you will need an Authoring Software or DVD Creator. (it often makes sense to stick with one manufacturer for all parts of the workflow) © waveCommerce UG 2010Tuesday, September 28, 2010
