  5. 5. Motherboard A large circuit board that all components in the computer connect to. (heart of the computer)

  7. 7. Processor or CPU The chip that does all the calculations for the computer to do its job. (brain of the computer)
  8. 8. Memory (RAM)
  9. 9. Memory or RAM Chip assemblies that store data temporary for very quick recall.
  10. 10. Hard Drive
  11. 11. Hard Drive A device that stores data, such as the operating system, permanently on enclosed magnetic disks.
  12. 12. Optical Drive
  13. 13. Optical Drives Devices that read, or read and write data from and onto discs using laser beams.
  14. 14. Floppy Drive
  15. 15. Floppy Drive Stores and reads data on removable magnetic diskettes.
  16. 16. BIOS
  17. 17. Basic Input Output System (BIOS) A program that works as soon as the computer is powered on to test hardware.
  18. 18. Video Card
  19. 19. Video Card A device that generates a video signal to be shown on the monitor.
  20. 20. Sound Card
  21. 21. Sound Card A device that allows the computer to play and record sound.
  22. 22. Network Card
  23. 23. Network Card A device that connects the computer to the network.
  24. 24. Ports
  25. 25. Ports Connectors, usually on the back of the computer for connecting peripheral devices.
  26. 26. Heat sink
  27. 27. Heat sink Metal radiator that absorbs the heat from the processor.
  28. 28. Fan
  29. 29. Fan Circulates the air in the computer. Helps cool the computer.
