American fridge-freezers are becoming more popular with UK shoppers, so if you’re planning to replace
your old appliance this summer, consider investing in some transatlantic styling for your kitchen.
Side-by-side or US style fridge freezers are around 40cm larger than traditional appliances and, as the
name suggests, have the fridge and freezer next to each other, rather then one standing on top of the
other. Many models also have nifty gadgets included: the most common is a chilled water and ice
dispenser, but many models also let you customise the temperature of each section of the fridge.
All these goodies do tend to boost the price of American-style fridge-freezers, but there are a lot of good
deals around to make them more affordable.

Another great choice for a style-conscious kitchen is the Samsung
RSH1DTMH, rated 9 out of ten by Reevoo reviewers.
Like most American-style fridge freezers, you get plenty of room, but there
are also thoughtful extra touches. C from Brecon particularly likes that it’s
“childproof [with a] quiet alarm when doors are left open which is useful
with children around”.
Again, the freezer is a little smaller than it could be, and there are some
complaints about the running noises of the machine (apparently it sounds
like its stomach is rumbling). It’s a weighty appliance, so make sure you
have some strong friends or delivery men to help install it.

Rated 8.9/10 by our reviewers, the Daewoo FRSU20ICB scores very high
on design. Reviewers have nothing but praise for its layout and sleek, eye-
catching exterior. Better still – as Cheryl from Birmingham writes “it gives
the kitchen more style, and freezer hold more food that you think you can
get in there”.
Extra features include antibiotic deodorising but not an ice maker. On the
other hand, as Gav from Essex points out, this does mean you don’t need to
have the appliance plumbed into your water supply.

Another manufacturer that designs US-style fridge freezers with bags of
style is Hotpoint. Rated 8.5/10, the Hotpoint MSZ80 scores particularly
highly on storage space. As Sam in Edinburgh comments “the fridge has
plenty of shelves and the racks in the door are wide enough to get two 4pt
milk cartons in it!” He wasn’t impressed just by the Hotpoint fridge
capacity, but also with the freezer adding that “you can fit plenty in it – this
model makes the best use of space I have seen on an American style fridge
freezer”.
This model doesn’t have a drinks or ice dispenser, but it does offer open-
door alerts, a holiday setting and some nifty technology to maintain a low
temperature when you load it up with a weekly shop all at once.
Final tip: running costs
One last tip before you take the plunge and buy: as well as the purchase cost, it’s also important to bear
in mind the ongoing cost of running an appliance. Electricity and water bills can really add up. When
you shop for home appliances look at the energy efficency rating (from A to G – with A the best)
According to Sust-it , the energy efficiency experts, Panasonic and Liebherr American fridge freezers are
the cheapest to run.
