12. Connected Appliances: Why?
1. For increasing energy efficiency (smart grid)
• through a direct dialog with utilities, based on suitable
“application profiles” and communication technologies
• indirectly, by embedding “Dynamic Demand Control” (DDC)
function inside household appliances
2. For accessing new web based services
• remote monitoring and control
• remote assistance and preventive maintenance
• “smart objects for active healthy ageing”: connected appliances
able to monitor the “vitality” of the users working as “health-care
devices”

18. Connectivity: technical trends
According to AHAM (USA) assessment, the highest
scored standards for home applications are:
• Media and Network layers: Wi-Fi, ZigBee, HomePlug
• Application layers: Smart Energy Profile 2.0 (IP based)
Energy@home profile (IT): ZigBee Home Automation 1.2
Indesit approach : ZigBee and “Power Modulation” (PM)
1) High-end Products: ZigBee node inside the appliance
2) Medium range & Low-end Products: use of PM technology

24. Opening the market to new services
Indesit PM technology allows a standard household appliance to
communicate at no cost, therefore it is suitable for mass production
Indesit strategy about PM: liberalization for opening the
market to new services based on connectivity
• Development of PMI (Power Modulation Interface) for microcontrollers
• PMI implementation on silicon by Japanese Renesas
• Free (non exclusive) license agreement between Indesit and Renesas
• A free license of PMI is available for any other manufacturer of microcontrollers
Indesit will adopt PM technology on mass production in two years
Any other manufacturer of household appliance can freely use PM
technology (no royalties to pay to Indesit)
