  2. 2. Clinical audit • is a quality improvement process that seeks to improve patient care and outcomes • through systematic review of care against explicit criteria • implementation of change, at an individual, team, or service level and • further monitoring is used to confirm improvement
  3. 3. Topic • potential benefit to the service • focused on the processes • Areas of concern • Common conditions • Index procedures
  4. 4. Agreeing standards of best practice (audit criteria). • Guidelines • Literature • E.g. National Institute of Clinical Excellence (NICE), National Service Frameworks (NSFs), National • Confidential Enquiries, National Patient Safety Agency (NPSA) or Royal Colleges/ National Professional Body.

Audit criteria (contd) • Publication of conclusive new evidence about clinically effective healthcare; • local or regional treatment guidelines, protocols or frameworks; • user views or complaints; • adverse incident/near miss reporting clinical/critical incident reporting); or • identified local priorities or concerns, e.g. areas of high volume, risk or cost.
