Librarianship, though being a key profession did not enjoy the professional status as enjoyed by the professions like the Medical profession, Engineering, Teaching, Law, etc.
Libraries were considered to be storehouses of books where the purpose of developing a collection was to preserve the documents and thereby discourage their use.
Generation of libraries
libraries that had closed access and an objective of collecting documents for preservation for posterity, that should be called as the first generation libraries, the library 1.0.
Then, the second-generation libraries (Library 2.0) should be the service libraries that provided Open Access and satisfied the first law of library science by promoting the use of books.
The advent of I T had given rise to the evolution of the third generation libraries, the library 3.0, which were called e-libraries, digital libraries, virtual libraries, etc.
Now the Web 2.0 technologies are going to transform the libraries further into another generation of libraries, which should be called as library 4.0.
What is library 2.0
Library 2.0 is a loosely defined model for a modernized form of library service that reflects a transition within the library world in the way that services are delivered to users. The concept of Library 2.0 is borrowed from the concepts of Business 2.0 and Web 2.0 and follows some of the same underlying philosophies.
The term "Library 2.0" was coined by Michael Casey on his blog LibraryCrunch as a direct spin-off of the terms Business 2.0 and Web 2.0.( Miller: 2005; Wikipedia:2007).
Primarily a library whether it is library 1.0 or 2.0 it should contain the basic philosophy of the service libraries.

It might appear to be an indispensable Knowledge Center (KP) for the seekers of knowledge, Recreation Center (RC) for seekers of recreation, Learning Resource Center (LRC) for students and learners, Technical Information Center (TIC) for technician, scientist, researchers, professional, etc. Community Information/Resource Center (CIC/CRC) for members of community, Cultural Center (CC) for preserving local/regional/national culture, Archival Center (AC), Information Therapy Center (ITC/IxC) for patients/caregivers, blogs, wikis, Mind Sharing Centers (MSC), Portal, Gateway, etc

The image should be saleint and ideal in creating a fantastic horizon in the vision of librarians with a hope to break the libraries walls and opening a way up to users any where and any time.
Further, building culture in the society and professional practices wou ld enhance the image of the library 2.0 as a sample of boundariless library.
However, the need to build culture among professionals and service providers, experts is obligatory, in the mission of the library 2.0, in order to optimize the use of web 2.0 technologies.
