What is NLP? NLP is the psychology of excellence and the technology of achievement and success. NLP studies and isolates ways to model excellence, and examines different ways people think, feel, communicate with one another, and build relationships. 'Neuro' refers to the mind and how we organize our mental life. 'Linguistic' is about language, how we use it and how it affects us. 'Programming' is about our sequences of repetitive behavior and how we act with purpose. NLP is an accessible model to enhance effective communication, personal change and personal development. The way you think affects the internal and external language and the concepts you hold. This in turn affects the way you behave. It is a dynamic and synergistic process: the whole is greater than the sum of the parts. Any internal or external change to any of the components will have an impact on the whole. Main Benefits of Using NLP NLP explores how we think and feel and studies or 'models' excellence in every walk of life. NLP is first and foremost about action. By using NLP you can give yourself more conscious choice over what you do and the way you act. Using NLP at work and in your personal life will sharpen your skills and boost your achievements. The theories and practices of NLP will help you discover what makes some people excel in all aspects of their lives, and will enable you to do the same. The awareness of how you do what you do is the key to self-management and influence. You can't control people or events, but you can manage our response to them. Your skill and your ability to manage yourselves directly affect the extent to which we achieve your goals. Applications of NLP to Business NLP has given rise to a trail of techniques that can be used both personally and professionally. They are used internationally in various business areas and enable you not only to reach and influence others, but also to reach and perfect the different parts of yourself. NLP can also help managers analyze success secrets of their best employees applied by intuition and teach others these secrets, thus "cloning" success without cloning people.

Presuppositions of NLP The map is not the territory Experience has a structure If one person can do something, anyone can learn to do it The mind and body are parts of the same system People already have all the resources they need You cannot not communicate The meaning of your communication is the response you get Underlying every behavior is a positive intention People are always making the best choice(s) available to them There is no such thing as failure, only feedback If you want to understand – act If what you are doing isn't working, do something else The Four Main Pillars of NLP Relationship , and specifically that quality relationship of mutual trust and responsiveness known as rapport. Whatever you do and whatever you want, being successful will involve relating to and influencing others. So, the first pillar of NLP is to establish rapport with yourself and then others. Setting your goal – knowing what you want. Precision is the key to success. The more precise you are knowing what it is that you want and why, the more likely you are to get exactly what you want. And the more likely you are to know when you have achieved it. It is whole way of thinking – consistently ask yourself and others what you/they want. Sensory acuity – using your senses: looking at, listening to and feeling what is actually happening to you. Only then will you know whether you are on course for your goal and can use this feedback to adjust what you are doing is necessary. Behavioral flexibility – have many choices of action. The more choices you have, the more chances of success. If we do what we always did, we get what we always got. Keep changing what you do until you get what you want.

"You can conquer others with power, but it takes true strength to conquer yourself." – Lau Tzu Why Changing Yourself? The best place to start change is with yourself. If whatever you do doesn't work, you must be flexible - you must change your action plan if the current one does not produce the required results. If you want other people to change, you must be prepared to make the first step yourself. If you cannot change your environment, you should change your attitude. NLP Solutions: Neuro Logical Levels of Change The NLP Technology of Achievement was specially developed to discover how people can excel, and most particularly when managing change – how to create the 'difference that makes the difference'. One of the NLP leading thinkers, Robert Dilts, suggests that there are six neuro logical levels of learning, communication and change. In a hierarchical order, they are: purpose, mission, beliefs and values, capabilities, behavior, and environment. 1. Spiritual / purpose – who else? 2. Identity / mission – who? 3. Belief systems and values – why? 4. Capabilities – how? 5. Behavior – what? 6. Environment – where? Any changes made at the higher levels will have a greater influence on you than those made at the lower levels. NLP Solutions: Reframing Reframing is a powerful technique to enable change. Different levels of experience influence the way we live our lives. The value of reframing is being able to consider an issue from many different aspects. Reframing is a way of getting people to think: 'How else can I do or consider this?'

“ Success is the ability to go from failure to failure without losing your enthusiasm.” – Winston Churchill NLP Solutions: Three Guiding Principles Success depends on both what you do and how you do it. Being creatures of pattern and habit, we unknowingly achieve success and construct our failures. Taken together, the three NLP guiding principles: (i) failure is not an accident; (ii) feedback is the foundation of success; and (iii) success has a structure can help you change old habits of thinking and your success hit rate. Once you have taken these three guiding principles on board, you will have at hand a valuable source of information – an effective prescription for the progress you desire. These three principles make it possible to turn what we used to think of as setbacks into success, get the feedback we need in order to know what to do next, and figure out the key factors we need to get right if we are to succeed. Case in Point: Getting the Best out of Students Benjamin Zander, a celebrated music teacher, a conductor of the Boston Philharmonic, and the author of the book called The Art of Possibility, has an effective strategy for getting best out of his students. In NLP terms, this strategy is called 'Creating Inevitable Success'. On the first day of class, Zander tells his first year students that they all get an A. There is only one condition. Their first assignment is to write a letter to him – dated on the last day of class - explaining why they deserved the highest grade. Zander believes there are several beneficial aspects of this dramatic role reversal: It is a great confidence builder for his students. It eliminates the often counterproductive sniping that people frequently engage in when they think only a few will win. Students invariably knock themselves out for that A because they do more to earn their own personal A than they would ever do for the traditional A given by a teacher.

NLP Psychology of Excellence: Balancing Your Wheel of Life By Using NLP You Can: To achieve the results that you really want by gaining the ability of setting goals that are compelling and that have a momentum on their own To develop your relationships building skills by learning how to feel comfortable with others, so creating a climate of influence To resolve conflicts either with yourself or with others by reconciling different and seemingly opposite points of view to find a solution that integrates both in innovative and empowering way. To become a visionary leader by mastering a style of communication that is so compelling and motivating using language that is so enriched that it inspires others to be a part of that vision. Hinduism: Aspiration for Balance in Life Hindu approach to the human life shows aspiration for balance. For example, the concept of four ashramas (stages of life) has been developed to actualize this need for balance. The same goal has the concept of three vargas (goals of life): artha (success, profit), dharma (consciousness development/ religious duty) and kama (love). In Hinduism these three purposes of life are seen as equal and essential to fulfill. It is said that artha, dhama and kama constitute the one way to moksha. Islam: Leading a Balanced Life A balanced life is the way of Islam. Islam teaches people not to be extremists: i.e. neither do too little nor do too much, but follow the Golden Balance. Islam teaches people not to be extremists: i.e. do neither too little nor too much, but follow the Golden Balance. Furthermore, it teaches people to seek a balance between various facets of life. There should be harmony and balance between all of the following goals: Financial Goals; Religious Goals; Intellectual Goals; Social Goals; Family Goals; Personal Goals; Philanthropic Goals; Physical Goals.

"You can have anything you really want but you cannot have everything you want." Define What You Want Defining what you want is the critical first step in almost any situation. What Goals are Worth Achieving? Goals worth achieving are mission-oriented goals. Channeling your grand vision into a specific direction and action makes the difference between being an idle dreamer and being a person with a mission. Taking a Systems View of Things NLP teaches you to habitually take a systems view of things – to look at the different elements in a situation as parts of a system which functions for good or ill. This system involves people and a sequence of events, thoughts, feelings, actions and interactions. Once you understand how the system is working – for or against you – you have a means of structuring things differently in the future. Some Criteria for Setting Your Goal By Sue Knight What personal qualities or skills do you need to accelerate your business or personal success right now? What obstacle (internal or external) is preventing you from achieving what you want? If you had it, what quality or skill would benefit you and the other key people in your life, whether at work or at home? What have you observed or heard or sensed in others that you wish you had for yourself? What is something that when you consider the possibility of having it you feel really excited or emotional, i.e. what is something to which you already feel really attached, something that is compelling in its attraction for you?

The Meaning of the Communication is the Response Your Get One NLP presupposition says: "The meaning of the communication is the response you get". We often deal with new ideas, with changing how things are done, with trying to persuade others about your point of view. There are many built-in obstacles to people automatically accepting and absorbing information, however. Perhaps the greatest single stumbling block to real communication is the one-sided nature of speaking. Most of us think of "communicating" as a one-way process. We concentrate on what to say, how to say, and how to communicate it better. But, in our zeal to achieve our goal and get our message across to others, we forget that at the other end of our message is an 'other' - someone with his own zeal, his own goal, and his own concerns. These often do not coincide with ours, especially at the moment when we are about to start communicating our new ideas. NLP Solutions: How To Prevent Misunderstanding Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) is an accessible model to enhance effective communication, personal change and personal development. Rapport is the first step in good communication. We are all excellent communicators – and still we are misunderstood, for we are not only gifted and creative communicators, we are also gifted and creative receivers. A sender cannot decide what the signal will actually mean to the other person, only what they would like it to mean. When you mean one thing and the other person shows you by their response that they have a different meaning, nobody is wrong and nobody is to blame. How misunderstandings can be prevented? This is usually done by paying attention to the other person's response. The responses you get give you valuable pointers about what to do next. Cross-Cultural Communication Challenges Culture is often at the root of communication challenges. Becoming more aware of cultural differences, as well as exploring cultural similarities, can help you communicate with others more effectively. Next time you find yourself in a confusing situation, ask yourself how culture may be shaping your own reactions, and try to see the world from the other's point of view.

The Power of Mental Maps People have different ways of communicating their experiences - some express themselves in pictures, others talk about how things sound to them, and others speak about how things feel. A Mental Map is a powerful way of expressing the thought patterns, pictures and associations that already exist in the brain. When new information is compatible with your knowledge structures it is accepted, when it does not mesh with your pre-conceived ideas or past experience it receives little consideration, is distorted or ignored. Accessing Cues In Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP), the clues and cues that help you recognize your own and other people's preferred thinking and communication styles are called "accessing cues" because they help you access the way someone is processing whatever is happening around them. Engage All of Your Senses Most people simply listen to the words that are being said to them, but words contain only 10% of the message. The remaining 90% is hidden in the body language and the tone of voice. Understanding body language can help you look beyond what people say to what they really mean. To remember better what's being communicated to you, try to engage all your senses whilst listening as human brain stores pictures, feelings, smells and tastes more effectively than words. Understand you preferred mode of thinking, your mental map: whether you are a visual ('see' the world), auditory ('hear' the world), or a kinesthetic ('feel' the world). If you are a visual, when you're listening to someone, first of all make what they're are telling you into a movie. As brains remember better things that are out of the ordinary, you can try distorting pictures or making them funny. To enhance the effect, add sounds, link feelings to your movies, put the taste and smells in. And exaggerate everything. Recognizing the Type of Mental Maps of Others: Selected Characteristics Visuals: maintain good eye contact; voice high-pitched, fast; good visual memory Auditories: lower-pitched voice, rhythmic and smooth; try to sound good; talk to themselves Kinethetics: feel hot or cold about you; pause in conversation; like to touch people and things

NLP Technology of Achievement: Exploring Relationships Try to understand your and other people’s perceptions if you wish to learn how to control your state of mind and enhance your communication. Don't forget that your and your prospect's map of the reality is not the same – the meaning of the same thing is different for different people. The first Neuro-linguistic perceptual position “Self” is a total self-reference, and operates from the self or from ones own eyes. Explore what you think about the relationship. Label both your own and the other person's behavior. Change the state – shake off all bad feelings. The second perceptual position “Other” enhances your ability to empathize. It gives you the ability to see another person’s logic especially when you are in an argument. You can also get some insight into your behavioral characteristics, and what someone else thinks about you. It is also an important model for strengthening rapport. Explore the relationship from the other person's point of view. Imagine how they experience your behavior. What sort of label would they put on it? How do they feel? Shake off that emotional state before continuing. The third Neuro-linguistic perceptual position “Observer” is a complete dissociation from the entire conversation or experience. Go outside the relationship, become a detached observer – imagine a stage and see both of you on stage. See that other person doing what they do, and see yourself responding to them. Shift your question from 'How can I change that person's behavior?' to 'How am I reinforcing or triggering that person's behavior?' Explore how else you could respond to him or her. The fourth perceptual position, defined as a “We”, is the viewpoint from the perspective of the system as a whole. In order to take the fourth perceptual position, step aside and take on the perspective of the whole arrangement by considering the best interest of the unit as a single entity. Associate yourself with the whole system. Here your aim is to contribute to this single unit, by considering “our” common goals.
