Deny, Deny, Deny! <ul><li>Chevron refused to admit and link between the public health hazards and the environmental problems they’ve caused in the Ecuadorian Amazon. </li></ul><ul><li>Additionally, the company has refused to clean up the pollution, claiming that they are no longer liable. </li></ul><ul><li>chevron has further denied direct compensation to the affected communities for threatening their health and their economic and cultural survival by polluting their environment. 1 </li></ul>1 - &quot;Business and Human Rights.&quot; Chevron (CVX) in the Amazon – Oil Rights or Human Rights? . 2007. But that’s not all… <ul><li>over 600 unlined oil pits in the Amazon rainforest creating a “rainforest Chernobyl” </li></ul><ul><li>18 billion gallons of toxic production water had been dumped into rivers and streams in Ecuador </li></ul><ul><li>The company has employed private military personnel whose job is to open fire on any protestors who contest oil extraction in the Niger Delta.” </li></ul><ul><li>On Wed., Feb 21 st , Kazakhstan threatened to suspend Chevron's license for operations and gave them a month to come up with a plan to remove 9.92 millions tons of dangerous crude waste. </li></ul><ul><li>15 Burmese villagers filed a lawsuit against Chevron for violating several human rights including rape, summary execution, torture, forced labor and forced migration. </li></ul><ul><li>On October 4, 1998, the underwater Chevron-operated South Pass 49 pipeline leaked more than 3,000 gallons of oil into the Gulf of Mexico. </li></ul>
  15. 16. Don’t Let that Stop them… <ul><li>Just recently, Chevron Corp. has announced plans to begin drilling in Australia. The company will start searching 1,150 square miles of petroleum and gas rich reserves in northwest Australia over the next three years. </li></ul><ul><li>Now that the Indonesian government ended retail fuel monopoly by oil firm Pertamina, Chevron plans to build and operate retail fuel outlets in Indonesia 2 . </li></ul><ul><li>Chevron is also thinking about becoming a partner with India’s leading private oil company, Reliance after increasing its stake from 5% to 29% </li></ul>2 - Xinhua, &quot;Total, Chevron to open fuel outlets in Indonesia.&quot; People's Daily Online 21 02 2007 22 Feb. 2007 <>.

Problems in the US as well… <ul><li>On Jan. 15 th , 2007, a fire broke out at the Chevron refinery plant in Richmond, California, releasing hazardous chemicals into the air and affecting those living in the communities near-by. </li></ul><ul><li>Local residents in Richmond also suffer from high rates of lupus, skin rashes, rheumatic fever, liver problems, kidney problems, tumors, cancer, asthma, and eye problems because of previous oil flares and toxic waste in the area . </li></ul><ul><li>Chevron has also been charged for using a gasoline additive that polluted New Hampshire’s water supply </li></ul>
