  • Shortcomings of the physical tape library: Low backup recovery performance m- and hi Since the number of the physical tape library drives is limited and the robot arm moving and frequent head positioning need long response time, the backup performance is low and the backup window cannot meet users&apos; requirements. Unreliable storage——Tapes among the physical tape library have no fault tolerance protection; therefore, if abrasion, tape struck, mildew, or conglutination occurs on any tape, all backup data related to this tape cannot be restored. Heavy maintenance pressure——The tape drives are unenclosed mechanical components and vulnerable to damages caused by dust or humidity. Therefore, the average faulty rate is high. Shortcomings of the hard disk backup: Low security——The backup data is stored in files and easy to be illegally replicated or deleted due to the maloperation. In addition, the file system tends to be damaged or attacked by the viruses, which may lead to data leakage or loss. Complicated backup media management——To create backup media involves multiple file operations in different OSs, including creating, formatting, and mounting partitions. Besides, the backup software performs disk-based media management and cannot provide flexible and complete disk backup media management. Bad storage scalability——Division, allocation, and expansion of LUNs need to be performed manually. These operations are related to a specific backup task and have no fixed handling standard; therefore, it is difficult to deal with them.
  • For instance: The key backup node uses the high-end VTL6000, while the branch backup node uses the VTL3500 or low-end VTL6000. Before transferring the data block to the key node, the branch backup node transfers the data block index value first. By comparing with the existing data block index value, the key node determines whether the data block exists. If it does not, the key node will accept the transfer request; otherwise, it will refuse the transfer request. The deduplication function increases the storage utilization of the key node and saves computing and network resources for the enterprises.
  • Deduplication can greatly reduce the system power consumption. In virtue of deduplication, a small storage space can store much data, which means less storage devices and low power consumption. Disk spin-down In the storage device that adopts the disk spin-down technology, the disks that do not have IO operations is in the spin-down state, while the disks that have IO operations is in the running state. Different disk spin-down policies can be set in the RAID group as required, such as timing spin down or spin down during a certain period of time. When there is no IO operations, the disks in the RAID group can be spun down or even powered off according to the spin-down policy. If the spun-down RAID group receives the read/write request, the disks will be re-powered on and support the IO operations.
