  • 2. The nuclear family actually consists of less than 25% of all households in America
  • 3. Married couples without children are currently the majorityconstituting 28.7%
  • 4. 25.5% of householdsconsist of singlepersons residing alone
  • 5. Today a little less than half (48%) of US household include a married couple
  • 6. vs. 1950 when 78% ofhouseholds included a married couple
  • 7. Current trends indicate thatpeople in the US are marrying later and less often with higher divorce rates
  • 8. We also see an increase in single parent homes & step families
  • 9. There are 1,300 new stepfamiliesforming every day
  • 10. Over half of Americanfamilies are remarried
  • 11. 75% of marriages ending in divorce, remarry
  • 12. Then there are unwed partners
  • 13. The number of heterosexual unmarried couples in the United States has increased tenfold, from about 400,000 in 1960 to more than five million in 2005
  • 14. This number wouldincrease by at least another 594,000 if same-sex partners were included
  • 15. It is more convenient for couples not to get married because it can be cheaper and simpler. As divorce rates rise in society, the desire to get married is less attractive for couples uncertain of their long-term plans.
  • 16. It is estimated that about 2 million children in the United States live with same sex couples
