IN THE ZonE
Welcome USAG Red Cloud and Area I Military
community members! April is a great month, not
only is it the opening of the golf season, but it is
also the month of Easter and Passover. This is a
time for families, faith and fun. FMWR will host
special brunches at Camp Red Cloud and Camp
Casey, as well as Easter egg hunts for children.
April is also National Library Week, so stop
by any Area I library for free gifts, drawings and
extended DVD movie checkouts. Our libraries
have a plethora of media available for learning
and passing time from books, magazines and
periodicals to Kindles, DVDs, and free internet
access. If you have never been to one of our libraries I challenge you to visit
at least two times this month.
From 12-14 April there will be a trip to Korea’s vacation retreat island of
Jeju. Jeju-Do, or Jejudo Island, is one of the nine provinces of Korea and
it is only 1-hour from Seoul by air. As a result of its isolated and romantic
tropical image, Jeju-Do has become a favorite retreat with honeymooners
and tourists.
The Commander’s Cup competition is heating up and units are
encouraged to get into the fight with education and volunteer
opportunities, sporting events, WAQ and BOSS participation. A Ready and
Resilient Force is the Key to keeping the Army Strong!
April is the month of the Military Child. This is an opportunity to thank
children for their support and recognize the important role they play in
contributing to the strength of the Army Family.
Lastly, I will conclude with some facts about the month of April you may
not know.
- 6 April 1917 Congress approved a declaration of War entering WW I
- 19 April 1775 an unordered “shot heard around the world” was fired at
Lexington Green
- 22 April is National Earth Day. The Environmental Protection Agency
(EPA) was formed as a direct result of this first Earth Day in 1970.
- 24 April 1800 the Library of Congress was established
- 27 April is Holocaust Remembrance Day
- 30 April 1789 George Washington was administered the oath of the
office of President of the United States

First 10 teams to sign up get to participate.
Team competition format with entries limited to first 10 teams to
sign up. Each team comprised of 5 members. Commander’s Cup
points for all participants. Each team will begin with clues and
competition rules directing them to a series of stations throughout
the course. Speed alone will not determine the winning team.
Paying attention to details is all important. Sound like fun? Sign up
early to guarantee your team will make the cutoff.

“A High –Adventure/High Adrenalin Outdoor Recreation (ODR) program
combined with L-LAAD as part of the Army’s holistic approach to RESET”
A platoon size element can make reservations directly with Family and MWR Outdoor Recreation. This is
a centrally funded program through the department of the Army. Activities include paintball, scuba, rock
climbing, skiing, snowboarding zip line, ATV, mountain biking, rope course and more.
This program meets MRT requirements. See your Unit Commander for details.

1) Each unit participating in Area I unit level sports program will be awarded 100 entry points per sport. If a unit forms more than one team
for participation in league play, the unit will be awarded entry and place points for both teams. Unit teams Must Complete the season to
be eligible for team entry points.
2) 25 points will be awarded to each unit assigning in writing a Unit Sports, Fitness & Aquatics coordinator (USFAC).
3) Units attending mandatory coaches’ meeting will be awarded 5 points.
4) Teams will be penalized 20 points for each forfeited game. Three total forfeits will eliminate the team from competition, and no
participation points will be awarded.
5) Unit will be awarded 5 points for each soldiers who competes and finishes in a Individual Sports Championship, maximum of 100 points

Now that the snow has finally melted
away, the weather has warmed up a
bit and grass is starting to turn green
again, it must be Spring! And what
better way to welcome the change
of season than getting out on the golf course and
putting those indoor swing and putting practice
sessions to good use?
The Camp Casey Golf Course has already made the
annual transformation from snow and cold to warm
and green and is now ready for open play. Whether
you’re a veteran or amateur golfer, the Casey Golf
Course has something to offer, so dust off those golf
bags, clean your clubs, call for reservations and tee it
up with your friends for a relaxing day on the course.
Former Soldiers and old-timers at Area l well
remember when there was no golf course at Camp
Casey. It wasn’t until the early 70s when a group of
2ID Unit leaders, all sharing the same passion for the
game, decided to do something about it. They soon
developed a small, 4-hole course where the Casey
Golf Course is now. It was not much to brag about
and not exceptionally challenging, but it served the
purpose, for the time being anyway.
Understandably, over time, the ‘course’ was
expanded as more and more Soldiers and civilians
assigned to Area l took up the game. In 1986 the
Casey Golf Course was completely transformed
into the professional-quality 9-hole course players
enjoy today. In fact, the Casey Golf Course has won
numerous awards since the early days, including ‘Best
in Class Military Golf Course” worldwide in 2009 and
“Top Ten 9-hole U.S. Military Golf Course” in 2011.
Much of the credit for the impressive golf program
at Camp Casey goes to Pak, Song Yong, Casey Golf
Course manager, and his talented staff who work
tirelessly every day to make the course, golf pro shop
and the popular restaurant the best they can be.
Pak began his career working with the Army some
25 years ago as a young ROK Soldier when he was
first introduced to the game of golf.
“I was just 19 years old at the time,” Pak recalls.
“I really enjoyed working with U.S. Soldiers. It was a
fun experience working with them and helping out

fellow Soldiers. After I left the ROK Army,
I returned to Camp Casey and landed a
job as a golf course attendant. I worked
my way up to sales clerk, then became
a recreation assistant, moved up and
became the assistant golf course manager
and finally, in 2007, to my current position
as manager of the golf program here.
“It’s been a great experience. I’m
honored to do my best for our Family
and Morale, Welfare & Recreation
Department,” Pak says with enthusiasm.
Doing his best is an understatement.
Those who know him say you cannot find a more
dedicated, hard-working FMWR employee than
Pak, who is not afraid to do what it takes to give
customers that feeling of excellence. It’s not unusual
to find him bussing tables or personally greeting
customers at the Golf Course restaurant, or helping a
beginning golfer find the right apparel or equipment.
Pak and his 28-member crew developed several
special programs to help beginners get started,
including his popular 4 for 3 special where, when
a foursome shows up to play a full round of golf,
they only pay for 3. Fun golf tournaments also drive
customers in and generates enthusiasm.
Free golf lessons every Saturday for beginners and
advanced golfers is also a popular program for young
and old alike. Pak says lessons not only concentrate
on swinging a club or putting, but also covers rules of
the game and course etiquette, all important ‘must
know’ aspects of the game.

Pak is especially proud of the new computerized
golf swing analyzer he recently installed at the Golf
Course that helps beginners and advanced golfers
take their game to the next level. The Golf Swing
Analyzer SP1000 as it’s known, gives golfers a clear
picture of their individual swing dynamics, looking
for any flaws they may have and recommending
corrective action as necessary to improve their game.
Everyone who tries the machine has their swing
recorded, along with suggestions on how to make
appropriate adjustments in their swing or alter their
body movement while striking the ball for maximum
effect. Golfers can keep their recording for later
viewing on a TV screen as a practice tool, giving
them an extra edge once they get out on the course.
Another popular golf program Pak developed over
the years is the driver demo day, affording golfers
an opportunity to test a variety of golf cubs on the
course in order to determine which ones fit best for
each individual golfer. For an additional $6 a day,
golfers can even select one of the available drivers
to try out on the course, a great way to get a better
feel for a particular driver before they buy.
Those who enjoy the game clearly welcome the
arrival of Spring, but Pak says anyone who never
played a round of golf before is more than welcome
to stop by the Casey Golf Course and give it a try.
He’s confident once a new player gets out on the
course for the first time they will most likely be
hooked for life.
Pak and his staff of professionals are there to help
beginners and veteran golfers any way they can.
“Our goal is to provide all our golfers with the
best service possible, but we love to help those who
never played a round of golf discover a passion for
the game,” he says.

through Friday from 8 a.m. until 7 p.m. and
Saturdays, Sundays and Holidays from 7 a.m. until 7
p.m. The dining room is open daily from 6 a.m. to 8
p.m.

he new Golf Swing Analyzer SP1000, the first of
its kind in Korea, is now available at the Camp
Casey Golf Course. The machine uses three
strategically-placed cameras and a video screen to
view and record your golf swing in real time. Each
swing is shown next to another screen that shows
how the swing should have been executed by a
professional golfer. Each ‘recording’ is downloaded
on a USB stick that golfers can keep for playback
later on a computer or TV screen.
“This is a great tool for all golfers because it
shows them instantly what they are doing correctly
or, more importantly, incorrectly,” says Pak Song
Yong. “There is no second guessing. You can see
exactly how you’re striking the ball with each
swing, and you can review it as many times as you
want so you can make any corrections that may
be necessary. Golfers are going to love this new
machine,” he says.

machine at the golf course driving range last week
and was duly impressed after hitting a dozen or so
balls and viewing the results on the spot. Onlookers
nearby were also amazed and impressed and agree
with Evans, commenting that the new machine will
become an instant hit with beginning and veteran
golfers alike.
Pak says the machine is available at no charge,
but users must bring their own USB stick if they
want to keep their recorded swing results for future
viewing.

SGT Hamilton Vargas-Cruz, assigned to 46th
TRANS at Camp Stanley, is the USAG Red Cloud/
Area l Volunteer of the month for April, 2014. Every
day after work, SGT Cruz devotes his time to various
volunteer projects in the Stanley Community Activity
Center, providing outstanding customer service to his
fellow Soldiers. Registered with the Stanley BOSS as a
volunteer, he routinely performs tasks with fellow
BOSS members, providing set up support at special
events, manning booths, breaking down equipment
and cleaning up the event area before, during and
after each event. A very quiet, but hard-working
person, SGT Cruz is usually the first one to arrive at a
site and the last one to leave, ensuring that the event
venue is left in the same condition, if not better, than
as it was before the event began.
In a recent BOSS Ski Trip to Oak Valley, attended
by 106 Soldiers, SGT Cruz, who does not ski nor
snowboard himself, volunteered his services by
creating a “guard post” for FMWR staff at the foot of
the slopes to monitor and ensure every Soldier landed
safely after each snowboarding or skiing activity from
early morning until midnight on each day. He also
acted as the Secondary Emergency Responder for the
ski group. SGT Cruz epitomizes the “Soldier serving
Soldiers” creed.
When not assisting fellow Soldiers on trips or
special event projects, SSG Cruz can be found
volunteering a minimum of 25 hours a week at
the Stanley Community Activity Center front
desk, or cleaning the outside surrounding area
of the new Stanley Recreation Center. He can
always be called upon to assist BOSS Soldiers and
programs with a positive ‘can do’ attitude.

Class Descriptions
COMMUNITY NEWCOMER’S ORIENTATION - Provides
newly-arrived civilian employees and all spouses information
on: common legal issues such as Ration Control and Black
Marketing, SOFA Stamp and Visa requirements, Non-Combatant
Evacuation Operation (NEO), installation support facilities
including Medical & TRI-CARE, Army Substance Abuse Program,
American Red Cross, ACS, Korean culture and customs, and
culture shock. This includes a “Get Smart” Public Transportation/
Subway Class to Uijeongbu; on the second day, a co-sponsored
(CAC & ACS) Dongducheon City Tour takes place from 9:30 a.m.
- 4 p.m. – a Korean lunch is provided. Child Care is available.
Open to all Soldiers, spouses and civilians.
IMMIGRATION YANGJU TRANSPORTATION – Free monthly
bus transportation to the Yangju Immigration Office for
NEWCOMERS and authorized community members requiring
SOFA/VISA assistance/ renewal.
CITIZENSHIP & IMMIGRATION OUTREACH – The Camp
Casey Legal Assistance Office Offers immigration services and
resources specifically for members of the U.S. Armed Forces and
their Families. This Citizenship & Immigration Outreach will focus
on Naturalization, Citizenship, Green Card and the I-130 Process
(petitioning for Family members for permanent residence).
FIRST TERM SOLDIER TRAINING - This important class covers
budgeting and basic money management, saving, credit,
insurance, and other financial topics. This class is mandatory for
all first term soldiers. This training is also available online at www.
myarmyonesource.com.
PLANNING BUDGET - Class covers the importance of
understanding the use of budgets, goals and financial
statements; identifying the essential elements of a budget:
saving, bill paying and expenses; becoming aware of the
importance of sharing Family financial responsibilities;
recognizing some financial aspects unique to military life, such as
frequent relocations, deployment and transition to civilian life.
SAVING & INVESTING – Find out how to make your money work
for you! This class covers different saving and investing options,
discusses the risks and rewards of each and helps you identify
strategies to reach your financial goals.
DEBT MANAGEMENT – This instruction will point out that if the
Soldier has a solid budget, he will know whether he can take on
any new debt. This instruction will help to understand how to
manage one’s debt and sometimes you just need to say no!
WHAT IS CHILD ABUSE - Learn types and definition of child
abuse. Is spanking my children abuse? When do I know if it is
discipline or abuse? Join us for this class and find out.
CHILDREN AND MOVING - Tips and expectations for a positive
move with children. How can you help your children? How can I
help myself? Learn how with our class.
PARENTING TECHNIQUES (6+) - Sometimes we don’t know
what to do with our kids’ behaviors. Learn some positive ways
to discipline children with natural consequences, not negative
punishment.
STRESS AND PARENTING - Sometimes our kids drive us crazy,
really? With our busy lives, parenting can sometimes bring
about stress. Learn some tips on dealing with stress and your
children.
EFMP ENROLLMENT AND UPDATING PROCEDURES – Do
you have family members enrolled in EFMP? Do you know and
understand how EFMP benefits your family? EFMP updates are
mandatory; please see us about the proper procedures.
EFMP SPECIAL EVENTS BOWLING (EFMP FAMILIES ONLY)
– For all family members enrolled in EFMP. Bowling shoes are
free. Come on out and join the festivities. For more details and
