  • Thank you for having me here today to talk to you about what the Y is doing to support healthy living in our community. I’m really passionate about this topic and we’re doing about 8000 things, so I’m going to do two things to help us all throuhg this. I’m goint to focus on one program and I’m going to talk fast, so keep up!
  • We’re going to start with a history lesson that, as all good history lessons do: teaches us more about where we’re going than where we’ve been . This is a graph of Obesity rates in 1985. Most states= no data. Light blueless than 10%. Darker shade of blue 10-14%.
  • Five years later.
  • Wyoming thinks maybe no news is good news…
  • Oregon falls down a little here, maybe Atkins worked its way over the California border that year… But, we have a new color back east
  • 2006 brings another new color Over 30% of the population.
  • This is the last year from which we have information—all shades of blue are gone. Let’s do that again for the full effect.
  • Obesity is a prime indicator of diabetic risk, so when we look through these maps again, you can just as easily imagine the key to say, “At Risk for Diabetes.” When we consider the effects of diabetes, this is a pretty dire picture we paint. Diabetes is the leading cause of kidney failure…A leading cause of heart disease
  • This is the good news. Obesity is preventable—We have the power to reverse these trends, and in doing so, prevent the devastating effects of type 2 diabetes. Diabetes is the leading cause of kidney….It is a major cause of heart disease…and is the number one inicator of risk for diabetes (and heart disease and so many other chronic conditions, but for sake of my 15 minutes today, I’m really going to try to stay focused. If we can reverse the color trends on that map, we can reverse the devastating effects of diabetes.
  • How? We start early
  • We were one of the first 10 communities in the country to roll out the YMCA’s Diabetes Prevention Program. We took this on because won’t live with that series of maps; we will not be sit back and watch those maps turn another shade of the rainbow.
  • Anyone want to guess? I’ll give you a hint. An ounce of BLANK… @20,000= cost to manage full blown diabetes annuallyCost to prevent diabetes annually25.8 diabetes79 million number of people with pre-diabetesHow much it costs to participate; actual cost to our Y is $350/ we subsidize it and offer scholarships to anyone who needs one.Adults with diabetes if current trends continue. One Story
