  1. 1. Early Life……..... ,  She was born in Skopje, Yugoslavia      on 27 August 1910. Name : Agnes Gonxhu Bojaxhiu Father: Nikolle Bojaxhiu Mother: Dranas Brother: Lazer Sister: Aga
  2. 2. Sister Teresa……. ,  In age 18 she left her paternal home joined the “Sisters of Loreto” an Irish community of nuns with missions in India. There she received the name “Sister Mary Teresa”.  In age 21 she took her first vow (promise).
  3. 3.  After training at the Institute of Blessed Mary     Virgin in Dublin she came to India on 6 January 1926. From 1931 to 1948 she taught Geography at St.Mary’s High School in Calcutta. In 1948 she received permission to leave the convent and devote herself to working among poors in Calcutta. In 1948 she took Indian citizenship and open her first school in Motijhil to serve starving and homeless poors. On 7 oct 1950 she received Vatican permission to start her own order.
  4. 4. Missionaries of Charity…. ,  She started missionaries of charity with 13 nuns. There was no money and she had to beg for food and other supplies.  Soon she received financial and voluntary helpers support and now there are over 4000 nuns.

Homes for Poors….. ,  1952- Opens Nirmal Hariday home (pure heart)for the dying.  1955-Opens Nirmal Shishuva Bhavan (immaculate heart) for lost children or children home.  1957- Opens Shanti Nagar(city of peace) a home for leppers.  1960- She began to send her sisters to other parts of India.

  9. 9. Her departure….. ,  In1983 and 1989 she had heart attacks.  1993- Suffers from malaria and had a surgery for a blocked blood vessel.  1996- Fell and broke her collar bone.  1997- 13 March stepped down as Head Nun.  1997 – 5 September died of a massive heart attack in Calcutta.
