  • 3. What will I study? • • ‘Media are the starting point, not the sum, of media studies’ – James Curran Media industries, media texts and media audiences
  • 4. What will I learn? • • You will… develop a critical understanding of the role of media in society; • be able to analyse media texts and contexts using a variety of theoretical frameworks; • be able to undertake independent research in media studies.
  • 5. What transferable skills will I develop? You will… • be able to think and write analytically; • be able to write with clarity, and to argue from evidence; • use online and other research tools with confidence; • learn and study independently, work effectively with others, and reflect on your own work.
  • 6. Media theory and media practice The course is: • media theory oriented; • about 1/6 of the assignments are ‘practical’ or creative in nature; • you don’t need any existing creative or practical media skills; • practical elements include photography, screenwriting and creative media writing.
